The Doomsday Vault is a monument that comes with the Cities: Skylines Natural Disasters DLC.

To unlock the Doomsday Vault you need to reach the Megalopolis milestone, unlock all 9 map tiles, and you’ll need to construct these six unique buildings:

All 6 unique buildings listed above are from the Natural Disasters DLC as well.

Once you have unlocked & built those six buildings, you will be able to build the Doomsday Vault from the Monuments menu for 1,600,000. Upon construction, the Doomsday Vault will improve the services of all shelters in the area (i.e., greater capacity for evacuees and larger stockpiles of resources).

Below is a basic guide to unlocking the six Natural Disasters unique buildings that you’ll need for the Doomsday Vault.

Meteorite Park

Milestone Required Worthy Village
Build Cost ₡10,000

Unlocking the Meteorite Park requires you to experience a meteor strike.

You can manually spawn a meteor strike on your map (a safe distance away from your buildings), making this a very easy unlock.

Step 1: Go to the Landscaping and Disasters menu, and click on the Disasters tab.
Step 2: Select the Meteor Strike.
Step 3: Right-click on the map, somewhere far from your city’s buildings. After a while, a meteor will fall on that location.

Disaster Memorial

Upkeep Cost ₡320/week

To unlock the Disaster Memorial, you must experience the following disasters:

  • Tsunami
  • Thunderstorm
  • Meteor Strike
  • Sinkhole
  • Tornado
  • Earthquake
  • Forest Fire

Just like with unlocking the Meteorite Park, you can manually spawn in these disasters from the Disasters tab of the Landscaping and Disasters menu.

You can spawn disasters from the Disasters tab of the Landscaping and Disasters menu.

However, the scale of destruction of these disasters will be much larger (some will affect your entire city).

You can work around this by creating a save file before hitting your city with disasters, and making sure autosave is turned off before spawning disasters.

Once you’ve unlocked the Disaster Memorial, close the game without saving. You’ll still be able to build the Disaster Memorial once you revert to your “good” (i.e., pre-destruction) save file.

Helicopter Park

Unlocking the Pyramid of Safety requires you to experience destruction without casualties.

To clarify: this means a building or structure must be destroyed by a disaster, but without anyone being harmed.

Here’s an easy way to do this:

Step 1: Build an isolated structure to destroy.

Select an empty part of the map away from your buildings. Then build a segment of road unconnected to the rest of your road network.

Place along that road a small ploppable building that doesn’t come with service workers (a taxi stand or small park asset works well for this).

Step 2: Spawn a disaster with a small area of effect

Go to the Disasters tab of the Landscaping and Disasters menu and choose a disaster with a small destruction radius. A sinkhole is perfect for this purpose.

Spawn it on top of your isolated structure.

You’ll want to spawn a disaster with a small area of effect (like a sinkhole) on a structure away from your citizens / Cities: Skylines

Once the sinkhole hits—destroying the building without harming anyone—the Pyramid of Safety will be unlocked.

Take note that unlocking the Doomsday Vault requires the Sparkly Unicorn Rainbow Park, since that requires you to beat all five scenarios from the Natural Disasters DLC.

So it would be most efficient to choose three Scenarios from Natural Disasters if you want to get the Doomsday Vault as soon as possible.

Below is a list of all the official scenarios (as of game version 1.16) and a brief description of their main objectives.

How To Reach the Megalopolis Milestone

You can only build monuments upon reaching the final population milestone, Megalopolis.

This can be anywhere from 20,000 to 90,000 citizens.

Generally speaking: the more buildable land a map has, the higher the required number of citizens per milestone.

Unlocking All 9 Tiles

You get a single tile at the start of each game and can expand up to 9 (if playing without mods).

You unlock each of the 8 remaining tiles at different milestones:

Tile Milestone
1 N/A (available at start)
2 Worthy Village
3 Boom Town
4 Big Town
5 Big City
6 Capital City
7 Colossal City
8 Metropolis
9 Megalopolis

Each time you hit one of these milestones, you can choose a new tile to purchase by going to the Areas panel.

The Areas panel where you can purchase new tiles / Cities: Skylines
The Areas panel where you can purchase new tiles

You may only purchase a tile that is right next to any of the ones you already own. Each succeeding tile is more expensive than the previous one.

Tile prices can also vary depending on the map and the amount of buildable land.

Doomsday Vault Tip: Start the Natural Disasters Scenarios Early

The first four unique buildings for the Doomsday vault are very easy; it is the Sparkly Unicorn Rainbow Park that makes this monument very difficult to obtain.

Two of the Natural Disasters scenarios require reaching 250,000 population, which can take quite a long time in-game. (And Island Hopping is especially challenging.)

So it’s best to start progressing on these scenarios rather than saving them for last.

Besides, you can also unlock the lower-level unique buildings (Meteorite Park, Disaster Memorial, Helicopter Park, and Pyramid of Safety) in the course of playing the scenarios for the Sparkly Unicorn Rainbow Park.

Also don’t forget that Sphinx of Scenarios only requires you to beat any three scenarios, which means you can unlock it as you work towards the Sparkly Unicorn Rainbow Park at the same time.
