The Science Center is a Landmark unique building in Cities: Skylines. To unlock it, you’ll need to have played through 5,000 full lifespans lived in your city. You’ll also need to have reached the Big Town milestone (requiring between 1,800 to 7,500 population, depending on the map).
When these conditions are fulfilled, you’ll be able to build the Science Center from the level 5 tab of the Unique Buildings menu.

The Science Center is one of the requirements for the Fusion Power Plant monument.
Getting Your Citizens to Live to Old Age
According to the Skylines Wiki, the typical lifespan of your citizens is 6 in-game years. So you can expect this unlock to take a while.
To avoid it taking longer than necessary, you’ll want to have as many people live to old age as possible. Below are some tips for making that happen!
Tip #1: No Disasters
It goes almost without saying that if you have the Natural Disasters DLC, you should keep random disasters switched off for this unlock.
Natural disasters, particularly those with widespread areas of effect like earthquakes, tsunamis, and tornadoes, can be a major cause of untimely deaths among your cims.
Tip #2: Try To Prevent Illness Among Your Citizens
Illnesses can also prevent your cims from living to old age.
The most common causes of sickness are:
- Contaminated water sources
- Living close to pollution
- Noise pollution
To prevent these conditions from making your citizens ill, make sure to:
- Keep your water pumping stations upstream of any drain pipes (sewage), and make sure any water towers are on unpolluted ground
- Keep residential zones away from generic industry, and polluting buildings like garbage processing buildings and ‘dirty’ power plants (e.g., oil and coal)
- Keep residential zones away from very noisy buildings such as garbage processing buildings, power plants, and certain unique buildings.
- Avoid zoning large clusters of commercial buildings close to your residential zones.

Tip #3: Provide Healthcare Facilities
Even in a fairly clean and quiet city people will still get ill. So you need to make sure there are enough healthcare facilities to treat them.
The most basic one, and which you get the earliest, is the medical clinic.

The Health info view will let you see your city’s total healthcare availability, and will show on the map if there are any places that lack healthcare access.
Later on in the game, you’ll be able to build hospitals, which can serve a much greater number of people.
Tip #4: Build Facilities That Boost Health
Apart from the buildings that treat the ill, there are also buildings that boost your citizens’ health.
In the base game you have the child health center and eldercare buildings. The Green Cities DLC also has several wellness facilities that boost the health of citizens in the surrounding areas.
