Detailed Unlocking Guide

Before Wealdtheow’s quest becomes available, you need to finish the Level 51 Main Scenario Quest (MSQ) “Sounding Out the Amphitheatre” from Alphinaud in Coerthas Western Highlands (X:31.6, Y:11.6).

This quest is deep into the Main Scenario Questline of patch 3.0 of the Heavensward expansion. You’ll need to do every MSQ leading up to “Sounding Out the Amphitheatre,” including all of the MSQs from the A Realm Reborn expansion.

Once you’ve finished the required MSQ, talk to Wealdtheow in Coerthas Western Highlands (X:16.9, Y:22.7) to begin the quest.

The Elezen priest Wealdtheow / Final Fantasy XIV
The Elezen priest Wealdtheow

A troubled Wealdtheow will try to compose himself as he acknowledges your presence.

The Dusk Vigil, a citadel watchtower built to oversee the Dravanian Horde’s movements, was lost during the Calamity. Inside its chapel lies an ice rondel that must be retrieved.

Ishgardian knights around Wealdtheow seem to be having cold feet, so the priest will ask for your help in retrieving this priceless artifact.

Speak with the Ishgardian knight Nadinie in Coerthas Western Highlands (X:20.7, Y:7.9) to continue.

Nadinie outside The Dusk Vigil / Final Fantasy XIV
Nadinie outside The Dusk Vigil

Nadinie will recognize who you are and question your sanity for even thinking of going inside.

She’ll inform you about a winged beast seen flying around the watchtower over the past few days. Not a dragon, but something entirely different.

After she warns and briefs you of the situation, The Dusk Vigil will be unlocked.

This dungeon requires a Level 51 Disciple of War and Magic job to enter and has no item level requirement.

We’ve created boss guides + reward tables below to help you clear this dungeon smoothly.

Boss #1: Towering Oliphant

The Towering Oliphant, a large mammoth wandering in the watchtower / Final Fantasy XIV

Mechanics:

  • Trunk Tawse: A non-telegraphed, frontal cone tankbuster attack on the primary target. Mitigate and heal through the attack.
  • Rear: A point-blank AoE attack around the boss.
  • Prehistoric Trumpet: A room-wide AoE attack. Shield and heal through the damage.
  • Rock of Ages Combo: An unavoidable four-piece combo on a marked DPS player. Shield and heal the affected player until the combo is over.
    1. Rock of Ages: Stuns the player with “Down for the Count” for eight seconds.
    2. Wooly Inspiration: A frontal cone AoE that pulls players toward the boss. This attack can pull every player in front of the boss, not just the stunned player, so move away.
    3. Tusk Butt: A non-telegraphed frontal cone attack that knocks players up.
    4. Rout: A wide line attack that extends based on the player’s proximity to the boss. At this point, the stun will have worn off. Share the AoE with the tank to reduce incoming damage.

If you’re having trouble with too many soldiers being resurrected, focus on killing the soldiers before burning down the boss.

Mechanics:

  • Skullsplinter: A non-telegraphed tankbuster on the primary target. Mitigate and heal through the attack.
  • Tumulus: A point-blank AoE attack around the boss.
  • Brain Drain: A room-wide AoE attack that resurrects frozen soldiers on the floor. The fight can get pretty hectic with AoEs, so kill the soldiers as soon as possible.

    • Lifeless Wind: Buffs the boss with “Haste+,” making his weapon skills go off faster for 90 seconds.
    • Blizzard: A single-target attack.

    • Black Eruption: Another targeted circle AoE that applies a 15-second “Heavy” debuff.

    • Rictus: Buffs the boss and themselves with “Damage Up” for 90 seconds.
    • Overturn: A large frontal cone AoE.
    • Widowmaker: A smaller frontal cone AoE.
    • Iron Tempest: A large pointblank AoE.
    • Dead Alive: Buffs the knight with “Critical Skill,” allowing the next attack to deal critical damage.
  • Hell Slash: A non-telegraphed knockback attack without a cast bar. Heal through the damage and run back toward the boss.
  • Death Spiral: A large donut AoE that usually occurs after “Hell Slash.” Move inside the boss’ hitbox.

Boss #3: Opinicus

Opinicus the Griffin / Final Fantasy XIV
Opinicus the Griffin

At the start of the fight, you’ll notice four piles of rocks around the arena. Stay away from the rocks until “Whirling Gaol” is cast so you don’t accidentally damage them.

Mechanics:

  • Alpine Draft: A large line attack.
  • Golden Talons: A tankbuster attack on the primary target that can destroy rock piles. Face the boss away from the party and the piles of rocks. Shield and heal through the damage.
  • Freefall: The boss will jump toward a random target for a non-telegraphed AoE. This attack can also damage the rocks. Keep a good distance from your party members and the rock piles.
  • Whirling Gaol: A room-wide AoE that pulls players toward the center. Players caught in this gaol will be fettered and get a stacking “Wind Resistance Down” debuff for 60 seconds. Once the gaol dissipates, affected players will be knocked up in the air with “Whirligig.” Hide behind a pile of rock until the gaol dissipates.
  • Winds of Winter: A room-wide AoE attack that applies a stacking “Wind Resistance Down” debuff for 60 seconds and destroys all the rock piles. Mitigate and heal through the damage. New piles will drop from the sky, so keep an eye out for those.
