FFXIV The Temple of the Fist: Unlock + Boss Guide

The Temple of the First Dungeon in FFXIV

You can unlock the dungeon The Temple of the Fist by accepting the Level 70 quest “To Kill a Coeurl” from Ortwin in Rhalgr’s Reach (X:12.9, Y:12.8). But this quest can only be unlocked after you’ve completed the story and final MSQ for patch 4.0 of the Stormblood expansion.

Below we’ll help you get through this unlocking quest, along with providing a guide to all the battle mechanics for this dungeon’s bosses.

  2. Accept the Level 70 quest “To Kill a Coeurl” from Ortwin in Rhalgr’s Reach (X:12.9, Y:12.8).
  3. Speak with Marjorie in Rhalgr’s Reach (X:12.2, Y:5.5).

Detailed Unlocking Guide

The Temple of the Fist is one of the 10 expert-level dungeons released for the Stormblood expansion.

To begin unlocking it, you must first complete the Level 70 MSQ “Stormblood” from Pipin in The Lochs (X:32.6, Y:22.9) to wrap up the patch 4.0 main story.

After doing that, speak with Ortwin in Rhalgr’s Reach (X:12.9, Y:12.8) to begin.

Ortwin will inform you about a young lady who wishes to explore the abandoned temple near Rhalgr’s Reach. This temple is said to be an old training ground for Ala Mhigan monks as well as a pilgrimage site for followers of the Fist of Rhalgr.

Sadly, the reign of the mad King Theodoric led to the destruction of the temple and it has been abandoned for quite some time.

Ortwin proposes you accompany the young lady inside the temple ruins.

Speak with Marjorie in Rhalgr’s Reach (X:12.2, Y:5.5) to continue.

Upon talking to Marjorie, you’ll learn about the origins of her fascination with the monks and her desire to explore the abandoned temple and its hidden secrets.

And then after talking to Marjorie, The Temple of the Fist will be unlocked.

This dungeon requires at least a Level 70 Disciple of War or Magic job and an average item level of 280 to enter.

Boss #1: Coeurl Sruti and Coeurl Smriti

The first of the twin coeurls / Final Fantasy XIV
The first of the twin coeurls

Most of the coeurls’ attacks apply a stacking “Magic Vulnerability Up” debuff for 45 seconds.

Mechanics

  • Pounce: A single-target tankbuster attack on the primary target.
  • Radial Blaster: The boss will jump to a random area and cast a large point-blank AoE.
  • Wide Blaster: A large frontal cone AoE.
  • Coeurl Smriti: After some time, the boss will spawn another coeurl that uses the same mechanics. Kill both coeurls at the same time to avoid the remaining mechanics.
  • Basic Instinct: When one of the coeurls dies, the remaining coeurl will buff itself with “Damage Up” and start using “Electric Blaster” and “Heat Lightning.”
  • Electric Blaster: A room-wide AoE attack. Shield and heal through the damage.
  • Heat Lightning: Targeted AoEs on random players. Spread out to avoid overlap.

Most of the boss’ mechanics apply a 15-second stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff and a 10-second “Damage Down” debuff.

Mechanics

  • Cardinal Shift: A room-wide AoE attack. Mitigate and heal through the damage.
  • Port and Star: Non-telegraphed knockback AoEs from the boss’ flanks. Stand in front or behind the boss to avoid.
  • Fore and Aft: Non-telegraphed knockback AoEs from the boss’ front and back. Stand at the boss’ flanks to avoid.
  • Fourfold Shear: A four-hit tankbuster attack on the primary target. Use mitigation skills and heal through the damage.
  • Killer Instinct: The boss will spawn shields in three directions for five seconds. Each shield reflects incoming damage. Attack the side of the boss without a shield, or wait for the timer to expire.
  • Hellseal: Each player will receive a “Sunseal” or “Moonseal” that needs to be matched with the correct ground seal. Failing to do so will result in a strong knock-up attack and further debuffs.
  • Tapas: Three sets of targeted AoEs on random players that are usually paired with “Fore and Aft” or “Port and Star.” Spread the AoEs out while avoiding the directional AoEs.

Most of the boss’ attacks apply a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 40 seconds.

Mechanics

  • Spirit Wave: A room-wide AoE attack that drops a whirlwind on a random player. Standing in this whirlwind will result in constant damage. Heal through the blast and avoid the whirlwind.
  • Hurricane Kick: A 270-degree point-blank AoE that knocks players back and stuns them for six seconds. Run behind the boss to avoid.
  • Touch of Slaughter: One random player will receive a green marker. Then, the boss will charge toward the player and deal 99% HP damage. Heal the marked player as soon as possible.
  • Dragon Heads: A wall of dragon heads will slowly float across the arena, damaging anyone in its paths.
  • Silent Roar: A large frontal column attack that knocks players back.
  • Rhalgr’s Piece: The boss will move to the center and cast a proximity-based AoE. Move away from the center to mitigate incoming damage.
  • The Rose of Destruction: Immediately after “Rhalgr’s Piece,” a random player will receive a stack marker. Stand with the affected player to share incoming damage.
  • Chakra Orbs + Furious Fists: The boss will move to the center once more and summon multiple chakra orbs. Each orb will strengthen his incoming “Furious Fists” room-wide ultimate AoE attack.
Everyone should grab as many orbs as possible to mitigate the attack. Players will receive a stacking “Damage Up” buff for every orb they grab. After grabbing the orbs, mitigate and heal through the room-wide AoE.
