Where To Get TM20 Safeguard in Pokémon Black & White

Using Safeguard in battle in Pokémon Black

TM20 Safeguard can be bought for 30,000 Pokédollars in the Nimbasa City Pokémon Center at the desk where TMs are sold. Nimbasa City’s Pokémon Center can be found in the Southwest corner of the town.

You’ll be able to reach Nimbasa City after defeating Gym Leader Burgh in Castelia City. After obtaining your Insect Badge from Burgh, you’ll need to cross the sandstorm on Route 4.

In Pokémon Black and White, Poké Marts are no longer a separate building. Instead they’re included inside Pokémon Centers. The desk where items are sold can be found to the right of the Center’s entrance.

Here are some key takeaways worth noting about Safeguard:

  • Using Safeguard will protect the user and its party from several status conditions. These conditions include Burn, Freeze, Paralysis, Poison, Sleep, and Confusion.
  • Safeguard lasts for 5 turns. The total moves cannot be extended by a held item unlike Light Screen and Reflect.
  • Safeguard does not heal existing status conditions. Safeguard will only prevent a Pokémon from acquiring new status conditions.
  • Self-inflicted status conditions are not prevented by Safeguard. This includes fatigue caused by moves like Outrage and Thrash.
  • Safeguard can be bypassed by the special ability Infiltrator. Pokémon like Whimsicott can know this ability and can status-inflict protected Pokémon.

Safeguard is a Normal-type Status move that prevents the user and its party from acquiring any new status conditions.

But Safeguard will not cure existing conditions.

It isn’t a particularly useful move, but can be viable in situational battles when facing an opponent that utilizes powerful condition-inflicting moves like Toxic and Hypnosis. Safeguard can also work in a pinch if you’re looking for blanket protection for the sweeper of your party.
