In Pokémon Crystal, you can find TM34 Swagger lying on the ground on the fifth floor (5F) of Olivine Lighthouse, also known as Glitter Lighthouse.

But you’ll have to fight through several Gentlemen, Bird Keepers, and Sailors to get to the TM if it’s your first time climbing the lighthouse.

Glitter Lighthouse is accessible right after arriving at Olivine City from Ecruteak City.

Getting TM34 Swagger (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Find the Glitter Lighthouse in the southeastern quadrant of Olivine City. It’ll be a very tall building near the coast.

Step 2: Climb up to the fifth floor (5F).

We’ll offer diagrams of every floor leading up to the fifth floor to help you get there quicker.

First Floor (1F)

Once inside the lighthouse, follow the path around the building’s center pillar until you find the stairs leading up to the next floor.

There are no battles on the first floor.

Second Floor (2F)

Every floor is roughly the same as the first one in its general structure, but you’ll find trainers waiting to fight you from the second floor onward.

As you make your way around the center pillar, you’ll be challenged to a battle by Gentleman Alfred and Sailor Huey.

These battles are unavoidable if you want to reach the stairs to 3F.

Tip: Watch out for blacked out squares! These holes in the ground lead to the floor below.

Their teams look like this:

Gentleman Alfred
Noctowl Normal-type Level 20
Sailor Huey
Poliwag Water-type Level 18
Poliwhirl Water-type Level 18

Due to the abundant Water and Flying-type Pokémon you’ll find in NPC teams in Olivine Lighthouse, bringing an Electric-type Pokémon is a great idea.

Tip: You can catch a Water/Electric-type Chinchou in the waters around Olivine City with either a Good Rod or a Super Rod.

Third Floor (3F)

You’ll fight two more trainers as you go around the third floor on your way to 4F: Bird Keeper Theo and Gentleman Preston.

Their teams are rather basic, just repeating the same Pokémon multiple times:

Bird Keeper Theo
Pidgey Normal/Flying-type Level 19

Gentleman Preston

Tip: Being a Water/Electric-type, Chinchou works wonders on 3F just as it did on 2F.

Fourth Floor (4F)

The fourth floor is the last step before reaching 5F and TM34 Swagger.

Here, you only have to fight one trainer. But you can take on both trainers if you want the EXP.

  • The girl by the stairs leading down to 3F is Lass Connie. She’s optional.
  • The man in the southern hallway is Sailor Kent. He’s mandatory.

Both of their teams are Water-themed:

TM34 Swagger Details + Uses

Swagger Move Details
Type Normal
Category Status
Effect Confuses the target and raises its Attack.
Accuracy 90%
PP 30 (max.48)

Swagger is a tricky move that inflicts Confusion on your opponent while raising their attack by two stages. It’s a high-risk, high-reward strategy.

If you’re lucky, the opponent will hurt itself in its confusion. Otherwise, the opponent will hit your Pokémon harder than if you hadn’t used Swagger.

There’s a 50% chance of either of these options happening, but there are ways to make damage less likely.

The best way to employ Swagger is to couple it with a Pokémon that can raise its Evasion or reduce the opponent’s Accuracy. If they can do both, that’s even better.

Tip: It’s also fantastic for Steel-type Pokémon, which exhibit resistance to Normal, Rock, Ghost, Grass, Ice, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Dragon, Steel, and Dark. Immune to Poison, too.

Almost every Pokémon can learn Swagger, but there are some exceptions. These are:

  • Weedle
  • Kakuna
  • Caterpie
  • Metapod
  • Magikarp
  • Ditto
  • Smeargle
  • Wobbuffet
  • Unown

Here are some Pokémon that will make Swagger shine:

Pokémon Type Location
Zubat Poison/Flying Routes 29, 30, 31, 32, and 46
Gastly Ghost/Poison Route 29 (morning and day)
Steelix Steel/Ground Union Cave
Skarmory Steel/Flying Route 45 (Morning, Day)
