In Pokémon Crystal, TM39 Swift can be found inside Union Cave in the top-left corner of the lower level. It is inside a Pokéball in the overworld.

To access Union Cave, you must first defeat Gym Leader Falkner in Violet City. Falkner is the first gym leader in the game, and the badge he gives you (the Zephyr Badge) is required to enter Union Cave.

Prerequisites

The only way to get to Union Cave is to travel through Violet City and do the following:

  1. Defeat Gym Leader Falkner
  2. Pass through Route 32

So once you’ve beaten Falkner, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reach Union Cave via Route 32.

If you are traveling from Falkner’s Gym, head southwest from the gym door toward the line of trees. The path heading south is Route 32.

As you travel south on Route 32, keep to the right. A path on the left will take you to the Ruins of Alph, which is the wrong way.

Since you have the gym badge from Violet City, you can pass by the guy who previously held you up.

From here, the path will split in two.

The left side will continue to take you south through wild grass, while the right side will take you across a bridge with some fishermen. Both sides end at Union Cave, so it doesn’t matter which one you take.

Swift is a Normal-type attack move that shoots star-shaped rays. It never misses its target, unless the target uses an invulnerable move such as Dig or Fly.

Swift is good to teach to most Pokémon, especially this early in the game.

If you have just received Togepi (from the Egg given to you after defeating Falkner), this is a good Pokémon to give Swift, since Togepi does not start out with any damaging attack moves.
