In Pokémon Crystal, TM39 Swift can be found inside Union Cave in the top-left corner of the lower level. It is inside a Pokéball in the overworld.
To access Union Cave, you must first defeat Gym Leader Falkner in Violet City. Falkner is the first gym leader in the game, and the badge he gives you (the Zephyr Badge) is required to enter Union Cave.
The only way to get to Union Cave is to travel through Violet City and do the following:
- Defeat Gym Leader Falkner
- Pass through Route 32
So once you’ve beaten Falkner, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to reach Union Cave via Route 32.
Union Cave Location (Step-by-Step)
If you are traveling from Falkner’s Gym, head southwest from the gym door toward the line of trees. The path heading south is Route 32.
As you travel south on Route 32, keep to the right. A path on the left will take you to the Ruins of Alph, which is the wrong way.
Since you have the gym badge from Violet City, you can pass by the guy who previously held you up.
Continue south through the wild grass until the path moves slightly to the left.
Keep going south until you start to see mountains on either side of the path.
Walk south until the path starts to turn over to the west.
You will pass a trainer named Liz, who is facing a mountain.
After Liz, you’ll continue west & then turn south.
From here, the path will split in two.
The left side will continue to take you south through wild grass, while the right side will take you across a bridge with some fishermen. Both sides end at Union Cave, so it doesn’t matter which one you take.
Eventually, both paths will converge and lead you south again.
Head south until you find a Pokémon Center sitting alone. This is a great place to heal your Pokémon before heading into Union Cave.
TM39 Location in Union Cave
Route 32 ends at the entrance to Union Cave (shortly after the Pokémon Center).
The entrance to Union Cave is just south of the Pokémon Center.
Once you’re inside, follow the cave going west.
Then walk around the lake & turn south (you may have to battle a trainer along this path).
Walk past the hikers (who will want to battle) until you’re heading south.
After heading south, take the first left and walk until you see a ladder.
The ladder is located up on a small elevated area next to Pokémaniac Larry.
From here, just head south and climb up the stairs to access the ladder.
Climb onto the elevated area & go down the ladder to reach the lower level of Union Cave.
Then on the lower level, take the stairs down the elevated platform and go west, then turn north to find your TM.
There will be a Pokéball on the ground in the top-left corner. Pick it up and you’ll get your never-missing TM39 Swift!
|Swift Move Details|
Swift is a Normal-type attack move that shoots star-shaped rays. It never misses its target, unless the target uses an invulnerable move such as Dig or Fly.
Swift is good to teach to most Pokémon, especially this early in the game.
If you have just received Togepi (from the Egg given to you after defeating Falkner), this is a good Pokémon to give Swift, since Togepi does not start out with any damaging attack moves.
