How To Get the Bike in Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen

Riding the bike around Cerulean City in Pokémon FireRed

To get the Bicycle in FRLG, you must first obtain the Bike Voucher from the President of the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermilion City. The Fan Club is on the west side of Vermilion City, right above the Gym.

Once you have the Bike Voucher from Vermilion City, you can take it to the Bike Shop in Cerulean City and speak with the NPC behind the counter. He will exchange your voucher for a free Bicycle.

Prerequisites

There are a couple of things you need to do before you can get the bike:

  • Be able to reach Vermilion City
  • Have the Bike Voucher

Really, it’s just one prerequisite because you get the Bike Voucher in Vermilion. But I decided to include both on here so you know how far along you need to be to get the Bike.

Getting the Bicycle

Getting the Bike is a two-step process because we need to get the Bike Voucher first. Without the Bike Voucher, a Bicycle will cost and absurdly high amount of money to purchase (1,000,000 Poké Dollar).

In fact, there’s no way to actually obtain 1,000,000 Poké Dollars in FR/LG!

So bottom line: we need the Voucher.

The Bike Voucher Location

You’ll need to make your way to Vermilion City. You can get there by taking the Underground path on Route 5 just beneath Cerulean City.

Once you’re in Vermilion City, head the west side of town and enter the Pokémon Fan Club. This is the building located directly above the Vermilion Gym.

There are a few characters sitting around a table in the Fan Club, but you want to speak with the President of the Club. He’s wearing a brown hat and a brown suit.

Talk to the President of the Fan Club, and then select “Yes” when he asks if you came to hear about his Pokémon.

After selecting Yes, the President will tell you about his favorite Pokémon, and at the end of his rant he’ll thank you for listening by giving you the Bike Voucher.

The Bicycle Location

Once you have the Bike Voucher, you can make your way back to the Cerulean City Bike Shop.

This is the building with the yellow awning located in the bottom-left corner of town.

Head inside and talk to the cashier. They’ll notice your Bike Voucher and hand over your free Bicycle.

Now you can go into your Bag and use ride your Bicycle to move around the overworld much faster.

Is the Bicycle Necessary?

The Bicycle is a Key Item in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen that lets you travel much faster than running on foot.

The Bike is also a requirement that you’ll need to eventually get. Because you’ll need the Bicycle to enter Cycling Road and reach Fuchsia City to progress the story.

And either way, why wouldn’t want it?

The bike faster than running and walking – it just can’t be used in buildings (similar to the Running Shoes).

I usually Register the Bike in my inventory by selecting the Bicycle from my bag and then choosing “Register”. Registering the Bicycle will let you quickly hop on and off the Bike by pressing Select, so you don’t need to enter your inventory every time you want to ride it.

A jack of all trades when it comes to gaming. I can sit down for hours in a casual playthrough of Pokémon, or I can spend months trying to hit Diamond in League of Legends. I love and appreciate everything about games, and love sharing that passion with my readers.
