The Charcoal held item can be purchased from the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City. This is the only way to get Charcoal in Pokémon FRLG, but it is a repeatable method, so you can acquire multiple Charcoals this way.

Each Charcoal costs 1,000 Coins, which can be won in the Game Corner or purchased from the counter for 20,000 Pokédollars.

Prerequisites

There are not many prerequisites for getting a Charcoal. It mostly comes down to the time (or Pokédollars) you’re willing to spend.

The prerequisites are:

  • Be able to enter Celadon City
  • Obtain the Coin Case to be able to hold Rocket Game Corner Coins
  • Win or Buy 1,000 Coins from the Rocket Game Corner

Getting Charcoal

Once you’ve grabbed the Coin Case from the poor broke fella in the café in Celadon, there’s not much left to do.

You just have to fill up that Coin Case with actual coins so you can buy the Charcoal. The Charcoal is going to cost 1,000 Coins, which you can either win or buy.

Either way, you’re going to want to make your way to the main building of the Rocket Game Corner in Celadon City.

Winning 1,000 Coins

If you want to take the long way, then I hope you’re a gambler with a lot of time on your hands.

You can get a free roll of coins by talking to various NPCs around the game corner. They’ll give you about 10 Coins a piece, so you can build a bankroll of about 50 Coins.

You can take these Coins and play the slots a few times to try to win 1,000 Coins the good old fashioned way.

I’ll be honest, though, this requires quite a bit of luck to pull off.

The slots aren’t fair and they’re definitely not rigged in your favor.

There’s no real trick to winning, either – unless you’re willing to exploit the game on an emulator. And even then, it’s likely not worth the time. So you’re better off farming money and buying the coins instead.

Buying 1,000 Coins

If you have some extra cash, buying the 1,000 Coins is much more reliable, faster, and easier.

500 Coins costs 10,000 Pokédollars.

So 1,000 Coins is going to cost you 20,000 Pokédollars.

To buy the Coins, head to the back of the main Rocket Game Corner building (the one with the slots), and talk to the cashier on the right.

Buy two sets of 500 Coins so that you’re sitting at 1,000 Coins total, and then you’ll be ready to make your purchase!

Charcoal Prize Exchange

Once you have your coins, leave the main building of the Rocket Game Corner and head to the little building next door.

There are three cashiers in this building. We want to talk to the one on the left, because they have all of the items (the middle clerk has Pokémon, and the right clerk has TMs.)

Talk to the cashier on the left, behind the counter, then select the Charcoal.

If you have the 1,000 Coins, then the game will ask if you’re sure. Select “Yes” and then congratulate yourself on your new held item!

How Does Charcoal Work?

Charcoal is one of the best held items in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen if you chose Charmander as your starter.

It boosts the power of Fire-type moves by 10%. This includes moves like Flamethrower, Ember, Fire Blast, etc.

If you equip this to a Fire-type Pokémon, then your Fire-type moves are going to do quite a bit more damage, and probably one-shot most opponents weak to fire. It’s also a great item for competitive battles, and for post-game challenges like the Trainer Tower.

A jack of all trades when it comes to gaming. I can sit down for hours in a casual playthrough of Pokémon, or I can spend months trying to hit Diamond in League of Legends. I love and appreciate everything about games, and love sharing that passion with my readers.
