In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, you’ll get the Everstone from one of Professor Oak’s Aides on Route 10. The Aide is in the Pokémon Center outside of Rock Tunnel at the end of Route 10, and you need to have caught or evolved at least 20 different Pokémon species to receive the Everstone.

There is no other way to get any other Everstones (aside from trading from RSE) so Oak’s Aide is the only in-game method to get an Everstone in FRLG.

Prerequisites

You can get the Everstone pretty early on in the game (right before Rock Tunnel.)

There are only a couple of prerequisites to obtaining the Everstone:

  • Have HM01 Cut
  • Be able to reach Route 10 (Rock Tunnel)
  • Catch 20 unique Pokémon

As always, Professor Oak’s Aide will check your Pokédex to see if you’ve caught enough Pokémon for the gift.

By the time you reach Rock Tunnel you’ll probably have 20 Pokémon. If not, it shouldn’t be too hard to backtrack and catch a few more!

Getting The Everstone

Step #1: Getting to Rock Tunnel

Rock Tunnel is on Route 10, east of Cerulean City.

So walk, bike, or Fly to Cerulean City and then head to the east side of town. There will be a Tree blocking the entrance to Route 9 that you’ll need to use Cut on.

Cut the tree down, then continue walking right. There will be a Scout on the path, and a little hill down below that you need to hop over.

After you hop down the hill, just make your way east as far as possible (you’ll have to go a little north as well.)

Eventually, you’ll reach a patch of grass. Once you see that grass, you can hop over another hill (or walk around it) and head south.

Just past the hill, you’ll see a Pokémon Center and a Cave Entrance (Rock Tunnel). Professor Oak’s Aide is just inside the Pokémon Center ready to give you the Everstone.

Step #2: Talking to Oak’s Aide

When you walk inside, you’ll see a scientist sitting at a table on the right side of the Pokémon Center. Go ahead and talk to him.

He’ll ask if you’ve caught 20 kinds of Pokémon. If you’re not sure whether you have or not, you can go ahead and just say “Yes”.

If you haven’t caught 20 Pokémon, he’ll just tell you that you need to catch a few more before he can give you the gift.

If you have caught the Pokémon then Oak’s Aide will hand over the Everstone!

Afterward, you can open up your Bag and give the Everstone to any Pokémon that your heart desires.

How Does The Everstone Work?

The Everstone is a held item that can be given to Pokémon to stop them from evolving. You can also stop Pokémon from evolving by repeatedly pressing the B button during their evolution, but the Everstone gets rid of the need to press the B button since it automatically prevents your Pokémon from even trying to evolve.

Now, why would you want to stop your Pokémon from evolving you might ask?

There are a few reasons actually!

Why Use An Everstone:

  • Aesthetics/Attachment – If you prefer the pre-evolved form of a Pokémon
  • Challenge – If you want to purposefully keep your Pokémon “weaker”
  • Breeding – Pokémon holding the Everstone are more likely to pass on their nature
  • Moves – Pokémon learn moves sooner in their lesser-evolved forms (ie: Charmander learns Flamethrower at level 31, but Charmeleon learns it at level 34)

The Everstone is extremely important for breeding competitive Pokémon because it significantly increases the chances of passing down your desired nature.

Other than that, some players just like certain evolutions of Pokémon more (or they get really attached to the pre-evolved form of the Pokémon.)
