Pokémon FRLG Shell Bells: Uses + How To Get Them

Sitting in the Pokémon Center in FireRed

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the only way to get a Shell Bell is to trade one from a copy of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald.

The Shell Bell needs to be given to a Pokémon to hold, and then that Pokémon needs to be traded from Pokémon RSE to the copy of FRLG.

Trading can be done in any Pokémon Center in both games either via a Wireless Adapter (Only works with Pokémon Emerald) or a Link Cable (Works with Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald).

There are no other ways to acquire Shell Bells outside of trading in FR/LG.

Getting Shell Bells

Prerequisites

  • Since getting a Shell Bell requires trading, most prerequisites are going to be related to trading. You will need:
  • A copy of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald
  • A second console and a Link Cable (Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald) or a Wireless Adapter (Emerald only)
  • A Pokémon holding the Shell Bell in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald

If you have the hardware necessary and a Pokémon you’re willing to trade in order to transfer the Shell Bell, then you’re good to go.

Trading

To actually initiate a trade, you need to head to the trade center at the Pokémon Center in both versions of the game (FR/LG and R/S/E).

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, head to the Pokémon Center and then go upstairs (via the escalators on the left).

Once you’re upstairs, there will be three different attendants.

The first attendant on the left will explain trading, while the middle and right ones will let you actually trade.

The middle attendant is for trading with a Wireless Adapter. The Wireless Adapter will only work if you’re trading from Emerald to your Pokémon FireRed / LeafGreen. If you are trying to trade from Ruby or Sapphire, you will need a Link Cable.

If you have a Wireless Adapter, talk to the attendant in the middle to start the trading process.

If you have a Link Cable, talk to the attendant on the right and select Trade Center to enter the Link Center.

After you talk to the attendant, you’ll find yourself in a room with a machine in the center.

All you have to do now is sit in one of the two chairs and then wait for the Pokémon Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald player to go through the process and do the same.

Once you’re both sat at the trading machine, the trade will begin and you can trade the Pokémon (and the Shell Bell) from Pokémon RSE to your copy of FRLG.

What is the Shell Bell?

The Shell Bell is a held item that heals your Pokémon when it does damage. Every time your Pokémon hits an opponent, your Pokémon will restore HP equal to 1/8th of the damage it dealt. It does not matter if the damage was from a Special Attack or a Physical Attack.

Tip: If the Pokémon deals damage with a move like Fury Swipes, then it’ll recover HP after every single hit.

So this is one of the few items that you can’t naturally acquire in-game, yet it’s genuinely useful if you can get one.

Is the Shell Bell Worth Trading?

The Shell Bell is worth trading into FR/LG if you can find a way to do so.

It’s a fun held item to use, especially on Pokémon that do a ton of damage.

There’s an argument to be made that the Shell Bell is completely outclassed by the Leftovers, but there are only two Leftovers available in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen anyways.

Besides that, the Leftovers held item is way better on a tank like Snorlax, rather than on a huge damage dealer/glass cannon that would benefit more from the Shell Bell.
