In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Thick Clubs are held items you can take from wild Cubones or Marowaks. To get a Thick Club, you must either catch a Cubone or Marowak that’s holding one, or use Covet or Thief on the wild Pokémon to steal it from them.

Cubone and Marowak both have a 5% chance of holding a Thick Club in the wild.

And there are no other ways to acquire a Thick Club in FR/LG (other than trading).

Prerequisites

Since the only way to get Thick Clubs is to nab them off of Cubone and Marowak, most of the prerequisites are going to involve finding those Pokémon in the wild. Specifically, the prerequisites are:

  • Be able to reach Pokémon Tower
  • Have the Silph Scope
  • Have Thief/Covet or Poké Balls to catch Cubones

There are plenty of other locations to find Cubones and Marowak at, and I’ll go over them below. But the earliest location is the Pokémon Tower, so you will at least need to get there first.

Getting a Thick Club

The first thing you need to do is to find a spot where wild Cubone or Marowak can spawn.

I recommend going to the Pokémon Tower in Lavender Town for some easy-to-find Cubones.

You can find wild Cubones on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th floors.

The 7th floor has the highest encounter rate though, sitting at 10%. So that’s the best place for finding an early-game Thick Club.

If you want a higher level Cubone (or a Marowak), then feel free to go to any location in the tables below.

Pokémon Tower 4/5F 15 – 17 9% 5%

Stealing Thick Clubs

The easiest way to get Thick Clubs is by stealing them from a wild Cubone or Marowak. You can do this by using the moves Thief or Covet.

Every wild Cubone and Marowak has a 5% chance of holding a Thick Club, so all you have to do is keep encountering them and use the move Thief on them.

If the Pokémon is holding a Thick Club, then an animation will play showing a little bag bounce from it to your Thief user.

Catching Cubones or Marowaks

If you don’t have the move Thief or Covet, then your only other option is to catch a Cubone or Marowak.

Well, actually you’ll be catching many copies of Cubones or Marowaks.

This method takes a bit longer since even at the most Cubone-populated locations, there is only a 10% chance of running into one. And then there’s only a 5% chance that each one is holding an item.

Because of this low encounter rate, I recommend clearing out your Party of all but one Pokémon.

Now when you catch a Cubone or Marowak, it’ll go directly to your Party and you can check whether it’s holding a Thick Club or not.

If you don’t do this, they will go to your Box in the Pokémon Center, and you’ll need to cross your fingers and hope one of the Cubones/Marowaks you caught were holding the item.

Now once you actually catch a Cubone or Marowak, if the Pokémon is holding a Thick Club, you will see the Item icon over its Sprite in your Party.

What Do Thick Clubs Do?

If you give a Thick Club to a Cubone or Marowak to hold, that Pokémon’s Attack stat will be doubled.

This is really powerful since most held items will only increase a Pokémon’s Attack stat by about 10%.

The downside, of course, is that this item can only be held by a Cubone or a Marowak.

Basically, if you plan to use a Cubone or Marowak on your team, there’s no better held item in the game than the Thick Club for them.

Cubone and Marowak already have a decent base Attack power, so doubling it makes them one of the hardest-hitting Pokémon you could add into your party in FR/LG.
