1 Silph Co. Headquarters – On the ground in the central room of the 7th floor (requires the Card Key for entrance) No

TM08 Bulk Up is on the ground in the central room of the Silph Co. Headquarters’ 7th floor (7F). But to access this room you’ll need the Card Key, which you can find on the 5th floor.

If this is your first time visiting the Silph Co. Headquarters, you’ll notice that Team Rocket has taken over the building.

So you’ll have to battle several Team Rocket members on each floor of the headquarters to reach the Bulk Up TM.

Bulk Up is a Fighting-type Status move that increases the Attack and Defense of the user by one stage each. Bulk Up is an ideal move for Pokémon that rely upon their physical traits in battle.

To get an idea of how both Attack and Defense are modified per stage, take a look at the chart below:

Stage Stat Modifier
1 1.5x
2 2x
3 2.5x
4 3x
5 3.5x
6 4x

You only need to use Bulk Up one time to gain a 50% increase in Attack and Defense.

That’s definitely a solid increase for one easy-to-acquire TM.

And even though Bulk Up is a Fighting-type move, any Pokémon with move types that use the Attack stat to calculate damage can have great success with this move.

These types include:

  • Normal
  • Fighting
  • Poison
  • Ground
  • Flying
  • Bug
  • Rock
  • Ghost
  • Steel

No Pokémon in FireRed or LeafGreen can learn Bulk Up via leveling. So it’s absolutely worth grabbing TM08 once you reach Saffron City during your playthrough.

Pokémon with great Attack and/or Defense stats that can learn Bulk-Up include Machamp, Primeape, and Pinsir. Any of those 3 would be great candidates for this move, but really it can work on many other options in your party.
