TM27 Return has the potential to become a powerful Normal-type attack when taught to a Pokémon with a high Friendship level.

Here’s the formula for calculating Return’s base power:

Power = Friendship / 2.5

There are several ways to increase your Pokémon’s Friendship, each with an assigned value.

Below is a chart displaying each method to easily increase friendship (also called “happiness”) in FireRed & LeafGreen:

SCROLL
Friendship Value Modifier Event Changes based on Friendship Value
0-99 100-199 200-255
Friendship-raising berries +10 +5 +2
Level-up in battle +5 +3 +2
Using a vitamin +5 +3 +2
Battling vs. Gym Member or Elite Four +3 +2 +1
Using a vitamin +5 +3 +2
Grooming +3 +3 +1
Using a battle item +1 +1 +0

The tried-and-true method of raising your Pokémon’s Friendship level is by simply using them in battle consistently.

Outside of battle, the fastest way to raise Friendship is by using specific berries such as Grepa, Hondew, Kelpsy, and Qualot berries.

Note: Return can only be learned via TM, so be sure to grab TM27 as soon as possible since it’s a terrific move on many high-happiness Pokémon. Normal-type Pokémon with solid Attack stats are the best to teach Return to. This can include Pidgeot, Snorlax, and Kangaskhan (among many others).
