Later on, TM43 can also be purchased at the Celadon City Department store. The TM sales counter sells the Secret Power TM, and you’ll find that on the second floor of the dept. store.
As for the move itself: Secret Power is a Normal-type move that dishes at solid damage at a base Power of 70. It also has a 30% chance of inflicting a secondary effect, which is dependent on the battle’s terrain.
Getting TM43 Secret Power
Location #1: Route 25
Step 1: Starting at the Cerulean City Pokémon Center, head west on the path.
Step 2: Follow the path northeast and pass by the small houses.
Step 3: Ahead will be a grass path lined with bushes that lead to nugget bridge. Head north on the path.
Step 4: Continue north across Nugget Bridge.
Step 5: Keep walking north from the end of the bridge onto the path ahead – this brings us to Route 25.
Step 6: The path ahead will fork left and right. Take the path going right, battling any required trainers along the way.
Step 7: The path east leads towards Route 25.
Continue east on the route, maneuvering between the bushes.
Step 8: Keep walking east and you’ll pass the several trainers nearby.
Step 9: You’ll see a Picknicker trainer to the north that’s blocking the path to TM43. You technically have two options here:
- If you have cut then you can go around and cut a tree nearby to access the TM.
- Otherwise you’ll need to walk in front of the trainer with enough space that the trainer will step forward. This will draw them away from the bushes and create an opening to reach the TM.
Step 10: After defeating the trainer, the path will be open and you can grab TM43 Secret Power.
Location #2: Celadon Dept. Store
Step 1: Starting from the entrance to Celadon City, head west past the Pokémon Center.
Step 2: Continue west through the city, passing the trainer and their Pokémon.
Step 3: Continue walking west on the path towards the Trainer Tips sign.
Step 4: Enter the Department Store just ahead. It’s the large fancy-looking purple building with two doors and orange awnings.
Step 5: Once inside the store, head north across the room.
Step 6: Just ahead is an elevator and a staircase. Walk up the stairs towards the second floor.
Step 7: At the top of the stairs you should see a sales counter.
Speak to the cashier nearest the stairs to access their TM inventory.
Step 8: TM43 Secret Power is available for sale for $3000 PokéDollars. You can buy as many copies as you want here.
TM43 Secret Power Details + Uses
Secret Power Move Details | |
---|---|
Type | Normal |
Category | Physical |
Power | 70 |
Accuracy | 100 |
PP | 20 |
With 70 base Power and perfect Accuracy, Secret Power is one of the stronger moves available early on in your journey.
This is without even considering its secondary effect, which can be powerful when used successfully.
Secret Power’s Effects
Secret Power has a 30% chance of causing a secondary effect, which is completely dependent on the terrain where the battle takes place.
Below is a chart that outlines each terrain type and the corresponding secondary effect:
Secret Power Secondary Effects | |
---|---|
Terrain | Effect |
Plain terrain | Causes paralysis |
Sand | Lowers Accuracy by one stage |
Cave | Causes flinching |
Rock | Causes confusion |
Tall grass | Inflicts poison |
Long grass | Causes sleep |
Pond water | Lowers Speed by one stage |
Sea water | Lowers Attack by one stage |
Underwater | Lowers Defense by one stage |
Secret Power becomes even more powerful when used by a Pokémon with the ability Serene Grace. The ability doubles the secondary effect chance of Secret Power to 60%.
This tilts the odds of inflicting a secondary effect in your favor – meaning every-other hit should have room to inflict a secondary effect.
So who are the Pokémon that have the Serene Grace ability and can learn Secret Power?
Your options are:
- Chansey
- Blissey
- Togetic
Chansey and Blissey are great choices to teach Secret Power to. They have the potential to inflict debilitating status effects such as poison while tanking their opponents’ hits. And Chansey is at least obtainable before you reach the Elite Four.
