Step 9: You’ll see a Picknicker trainer to the north that’s blocking the path to TM43. You technically have two options here:

  1. If you have cut then you can go around and cut a tree nearby to access the TM.
  2. Otherwise you’ll need to walk in front of the trainer with enough space that the trainer will step forward. This will draw them away from the bushes and create an opening to reach the TM.

Secret Power Move Details
Type Normal
Category Physical
Power 70
Accuracy 100
PP 20

With 70 base Power and perfect Accuracy, Secret Power is one of the stronger moves available early on in your journey.

This is without even considering its secondary effect, which can be powerful when used successfully.

Secret Power’s Effects

Secret Power has a 30% chance of causing a secondary effect, which is completely dependent on the terrain where the battle takes place.

Below is a chart that outlines each terrain type and the corresponding secondary effect:

Secret Power Secondary Effects
Terrain Effect
Plain terrain Causes paralysis
Sand Lowers Accuracy by one stage
Cave Causes flinching
Rock Causes confusion
Tall grass Inflicts poison
Long grass Causes sleep
Pond water Lowers Speed by one stage
Sea water Lowers Attack by one stage
Underwater Lowers Defense by one stage

Secret Power becomes even more powerful when used by a Pokémon with the ability Serene Grace. The ability doubles the secondary effect chance of Secret Power to 60%.

This tilts the odds of inflicting a secondary effect in your favor – meaning every-other hit should have room to inflict a secondary effect.

So who are the Pokémon that have the Serene Grace ability and can learn Secret Power?

Your options are:

  • Chansey
  • Blissey
  • Togetic

Chansey and Blissey are great choices to teach Secret Power to. They have the potential to inflict debilitating status effects such as poison while tanking their opponents’ hits. And Chansey is at least obtainable before you reach the Elite Four.
