Silph Co. & Saffron City: Pokémon FRLG Walkthrough Part 10

Sitting in the Silph Co. President’s Office in Saffron City

Quick Guide

  1. Get TM29 from Mr. Psychic
  2. Get Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan from the Dojo
  3. Defeat Giovanni in Silph Co. and receive the Master Ball from the President
  4. Defeat Sabrina in the Saffron City Gym to receive the Marsh Badge

Exploring Saffron

We have two main goals in Saffron City; kicking Team Rocket out of Silph Co. (and getting the Master Ball), and then beating the Saffron City Gym.

However, there are a couple of extra places to check out first.

You’ll notice a lot of Rocket Grunts running around the city, blocking doors, and just being a general menace. You can ignore these guys and gals for now because we have bigger fish to fry.

Before heading to Silph Co., we’re going to pick up a strong Psychic type move and a strong Fighting Type Pokémon.

Of course, these things are optional if you don’t have a Psychic Pokémon or don’t want a new Fighting Type, but they can’t hurt to have.

Side Task #1: Mr. Psychic (Getting TM29 Psychic)

Mr. Psychic has a yellow house on the south side of Saffron City. You’ll know it’s his house because he has a mailbox with his name written on it.

Mr. Psychic is psychic, so he knows what you’re there for. Just talk to him and he’ll hand you TM29 for free.

Psychic is the best Psychic Type move in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, so you’ll want to teach it to one of your Pokémon ASAP.

Side Task #2: Fighting Dojo (Getting Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan)

Next up is the Fighting Dojo.

The Dojo is right next to the Saffron Gym. Since we can’t go into the actual Saffron Gym yet, we might as well head into the Dojo for some EXP & pick up a new Pokémon.

Inside the Dojo, you’ll be challenged by up to 5 trainers.

How many you fight will be up to you.

If you walk straight down the middle of the Dojo, they will all challenge you, while if you hug a wall you can make it out while only battling 3.

Of course, since this is a Dojo, every trainer inside will use Fighting Type Pokémon. Flying and Psychic (wink wink) Pokémon will make quick work of the Dojo.

After you beat the final trainer, you can choose one of two Poké Balls sitting behind him.

These Poké Balls contain Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee.

Which one you choose is completely up to you and comes down to personal preference, but Hitmonlee is the stronger of the two.

Silph Co. Building Guide

After you’ve gotten your new Pokémon, we can rescue Silph Co. from Team Rocket.

Although before taking on Silph Co., I recommend stopping by the Poké Mart and picking up some Hyper Potions and maybe a Revive or two.

In the middle of Saffron City is a tall, fancy building with a Rocket Grunt outside guarding the doorway. Thankfully for us, that Rocket Grunt has fallen asleep!

This means we can slip right past and enter Silph Co.

Unfortunately Silph Co. has been taken over by Team Rocket and their leader Giovanni (remember him?) so it’s up to us to liberate the employees.

Silph Co. Walkthrough (Step-by-Step)

There’s a lot of exploring you can do in this area, but generally the extra items aren’t a huge deal.

For this walkthrough I’ll show you where to go to complete this section quickly, while also pointing out a few tips along the way.

Step 1: When you first enter Silph Co., walk to the back of the room (behind the fountain) and find the red elevator doors.

Step 2: Walk inside of the elevator and press A on the buttons in the back left corner. Choose the 5th floor and then ride the elevator up.

Step 3: Leave the elevator on the fifth floor, and then start walking west until you see a scientist (do not take the teleport pad).

Step 4: Once you walk past (or defeat) the scientist, start walking south down the narrow hallway.

Step 5: Once you reach the Team Rocket Grunt and the teleport pad at the end of the hallway, take the teleport pad one time.

Step 7: Once you’re back by the Team Rocket Grunt in the hallway, you can start walking east down the corridor line with plants.

Step 8: There is a Poké Ball in the middle of this corridor that contains the Card Key. Pick the Poké Ball up.

Step 13: Once you walk through the opened gate, there will be a teleport pad in the bottom left corner of the room. Take this pad to proceed to a battle with your Rival.

Before you take the teleport pad, it’s a good idea to leave and heal up at the Pokémon Center if needed – or you can use items if you have enough to get your team back to full health.

Rival Fight

Challenging our Rival in Silph Co. in Saffron City

This is our toughest fight yet.

Our Rival has some pretty strong Pokémon, and after we defeat him we’ll have to take on Giovanni, so make sure your Pokémon are a high enough level.

Rival’s Team (Silph Co.)
Pokémon Level
Pidgeot 37
Gyarados 35
Exeggcute 38
Alakazam 35
Charizard, Venusaur, Blastoise 40

As you can see, your Rival’s Pokémon are all around level 35 – 40. So that’s what you should aim for with your own Pokémon’s levels.

If your Pokémon aren’t high enough level yet, there are plenty of Rocket Grunts throughout Silph Co. for you to train on (you also have the VS Seeker too).

Giovanni Fight (Getting the Master Ball)

After you defeat your Rival, talk to the other person in this room to receive a free Lapras.

Afterwards, you can continue to the next teleport pad in the bottom of the room to go face Giovanni.

The Giovanni fight is about as tough as your Rival’s team. So if you were able to wipe the floor with your rival, then Giovanni will be a piece of cake.

His Pokémon have changed a bit since the last time we fought him, but not much:

Giovanni’s Team (Silph Co.)
Pokémon Level
Nidorino 37
Nidoqueen 41
Kangaskhan 35
Rhyhorn 37

After you defeat Giovanni, he’ll give you a boring speech and run off. Then you can talk to the Silph Co. President.

He’ll thank you for saving the day and hand over the best prize in the entire game: the Master Ball.

After you have the Master Ball, you can leave Silph Co. and get ready to take on the Saffron City Gym.

Saffron City Gym

After you defeat Giovanni in Silph Co., Team Rocket will leave the city and you can finally walk around in peace.

This also means there will be no Grunt in front of the Saffron City Gym, and we can finally take on Sabrina.

Outside of the Saffron City Gym / Pokemon FRLG
Outside of the Saffron City Gym

Sabrina and her Gym goers all use Psychic Type Pokémon, which are weak to Bugs, Dark, and Ghost Type moves.

There’s also a little puzzle in the Gym that involves taking teleport pads (deja vu).

If you want to reach Sabrina as fast as possible, here’s the exact order of teleport pads you want to follow in the Saffron City Gym:

  1. First teleport pad at the entrance
  2. Bottom Left
  3. Bottom Right
  4. Bottom Left
  5. Bottom Left

This will put you right on Sabrina’s doorstep.

Sabrina’s Team
Pokémon Level
Kadabra 38
Venomoth 38
Mr. Mime 37
Alakazam 43

After you defeat Sabrina, she’ll give you the Marsh Badge and TM04 Calm Mind. The Marsh Badge lets you control Pokémon up to level 70 and use Rock Smash outside of battle (stay tuned for more info on this).

And also, once you defeat her you can retrace your steps in reverse order with the teleport pads to make your way back to the entrance.

Leave the Gym and prepare to make your way to our next stop, Fuchsia City.

A jack of all trades when it comes to gaming. I can sit down for hours in a casual playthrough of Pokémon, or I can spend months trying to hit Diamond in League of Legends. I love and appreciate everything about games, and love sharing that passion with my readers.
