Where To Get Lagging Tails in Pokémon HGSS

On Route 47 where you can find the Lagging Tail (HeartGold)

You have two choices to get a Lagging Tail in HeartGold/SoulSilver. You can:

  • Pick one up from the ground on Route 47 (once only)
  • Steal them from wild Slowpoke or Lickitung, who hold them 5% of the time (repeatable)

The Lagging Tail is a curious item with incredibly niche usefulness. It makes the Pokémon holding it move last in battle, regardless of its Speed stat.

This means it’s mostly useful when used alongside item-switching moves like Trick and Switcheroo.

If this kind of tactical trickery sounds appealing, we’ll go through both of the methods you can use to get a Lagging Tail.

Method 1: Finding The Lagging Tail on Route 47

To find the Lagging Tail on Route 47, you must first heal the sick Amphy in Olivine Lighthouse as part of the main storyline.

After this, Baoba will call you up and invite you to try the Safari Zone, opening up the way to Route 47.

To get there, travel to Cianwood City and enter Cliff Edge Gate through the cave entrance in the city’s western wall.

Once inside, pass through the gate and head up several flights of stairs. Eventually you’ll reach the exit out onto Route 47.

Follow the path round the cliff until you get to the next cave entrance, pictured below. Head inside.

Once you’re inside, climb the ladder upward one floor and then exit the cave once again.

Now follow the path leading to the left round until you reach the point pictured below.

When you reach the end of the bridge pictured above, follow the grass downward.

Before long, you’ll see a Pokéball on the ground. This contains your Lagging Tail.

Method 2: Stealing Lagging Tails from Wild Slowpoke or Lickitung

Wild Slowpoke and Lickitung both have a 5% chance of holding a Lagging Tail, which you can steal by either catching them or using the move Thief on them.

You can find the TM46 for Thief in Mahogany Town’s Team Rocket HQ.

The following table shows all the locations where you can find Slowpoke and Lickitung in the wild.

Slowpoke Slowpoke Well
Tohjo Falls
The Safari Zone’s Rocky Beach area
Lickitung Route 44
The Safari Zone’s Forest area with 3 Waterside points
The Safari Zone’s Mountain area (morning or day only)

The easiest locations to farm Lagging Tails this way would probably be in the Slowpoke Well or on Route 44.
