Where To Get Poison Barbs in Pokémon HGSS

Walking with a Qwilfish in Pokémon HeartGold

The easiest method to get a Poison Barb is to talk to Frieda on Route 32 on a Friday. However, she will only give you this item once.

Alternatively, Wild Pokémon such as Tentacool, Qwilfish and Beedrill have a 5% chance of holding a Poison Barb which you can acquire by catching them or stealing it during battle.

In the table below we’ve listed all possible methods of getting Poison Barbs in the game.

All Poison Barb Locations
Location How Often?
1 Frieda (Week Sibling) on Route 32 on Fridays Once-only
2 Held item (5% chance) from these wild Pokémon:

  • Beedrill
  • Tentacool
  • Tentacruel
  • Qwilfish
  • Roselia
  • Budew
  • Skorupi
Repeatable

The Poison Barb is an item that can boost the power of Poison-type attacks by 20% for the Pokémon holding it. This makes the item useful in battle to Pokémon able to learn Poison-type moves.

Method #1: Talking to Frieda on Friday

Frieda is one of seven characters known as the Week Siblings and can be found on Route 32 on Fridays.

She is in the small clearing behind the Pokémon Center.

Method #2: Stealing Poison Barbs from Wild Pokémon

You can only find Wild Pokémon holding Poison Barbs after winning your first Gym Badge from Falkner’s Gym. The earliest wild Pokémon with a chance of carrying the item are Tentacool you can find on Route 32 using the Old Rod.

Further in the game there are many other Wild Pokémon to be found holding this item.

Either way, to farm their held items you’ll either need to catch the wild Pokémon and remove the item from it after battle, or you can use the attack Thief to steal it from the Pokémon.

Tip: TM46 (Thief) can be found in B2F of Team Rocket’s Hideout.

How To Speed Up The Search

No matter which of the Wild Pokémon you decide to go after, there is only a 5% chance that they will be holding a Poison Barb.

But there are some ways to make the process faster.

If you have a Pokémon with the ability Compoundeyes leading the party, then the chance of finding any held item (like a Poison Barb) will increase to 20%. The Pokémon with this ability are:

  • Butterfree
  • Venonat
  • Yanma
  • Nincada

Similarly, the ability Frisk is also useful for narrowing your search. It will alert you if your opponent Pokémon is carrying an item upon entering battle, so you can quickly know if it is worth pursuing further.

Only Stantler has this ability in HeartGold/SoulSilver.
