How To Re-Battle Your Rival in Pokémon HG/SS

Challenging your rival (custom collage) in Pokémon HeartGold

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, you can repeatedly re-battle your rival once you’ve defeated the Elite Four in Johto and gained access to the Kanto region. You’ll be able to initiate rematches with your rival at the Pokémon League just by completing a short post-game side-quest.

The side-quest involves two main things:

  1. You’ll need to defeat your Rival in Mt. Moon in Kanto
  2. Then you’ll need to team up with your Rival in a double battle in the Dragon’s Den, located behind the Blackthorn City Gym

Completing this side-quest will then spawn your rival at the Pokémon League to challenge you every Monday and Wednesday for rematch battles.

If you haven’t fought your rival since Victory Road, then you’ll need to head to Mt. Moon in Kanto.

You can get here by Flying to Pewter City and then walking east across Route 3.

Once you enter Mt. Moon for the first time, you’ll be stopped by your rival. He’s busy training his Pokémon in the region, and he’ll challenge you to a battle.

His party will consist of the following Pokémon:

After you defeat him at Mt. Moon, he’ll mention that he’s going to take his Pokémon to the Dragon’s Den for training.

The Dragon’s Den can be found in Blackthorn City in Johto, specifically by surfing behind the Blackthorn Gym.

This will be your next stop.

Once you’ve battled your rival at Mt. Moon, you should be able to find him again at the Shrine in the Dragon’s Den.

The entrance to the Dragon’s Den is located behind the Blackthorn City Pokémon Gym.

To reach it, you’ll need to surf on the body of water directly behind the structure.

Once you enter the Dragon’s Den and make your way to the lowest level, you’ll need to use Surf and Whirlpool again to reach the Shrine.

At the Shrine, you’ll find your rival training his partner Pokémon.

If you approach him then he’ll dive into a brief dialogue about his training. Then Lance and Clair will appear and suggest a Double Battle.

You’ll team up with your rival to defeat them.

After you win this battle, you’ll now be able to challenge your rival at the Pokémon League on Mondays and Wednesdays.

If you just want to talk with him though, he can be found at the Dragon’s Den on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (Do keep in mind that he won’t initiate a battle while he’s here).
