TM61 Will-O-Wisp is one of the TMs only available at the Battle Frontier, where you’ll need to exchange Battle Points (BP) for the TM. It costs 32 BP, and you can get multiple copies as long as you have enough BP to afford them.

But to gain access the Battle Frontier area, you’ll need to beat the Elite Four for the first time.

Finding TM61 Will-O-Wisp

The Battle Frontier is to the left of Olivine City.

If you have never been to the Battle Frontier before, you can get there by taking Olivine City’s west exit. Just go west past Olivine City’s Pokémon Center and keep walking onto Route 40.

Move west until you see the gate in the upper left corner of the route.

If you have already beaten the Pokémon League, then the NPC managing the gate will not block your way.

So you can proceed through the gate and you should find yourself in the Frontier Access area.

Continue heading north through the Frontier Access area until you come across a sheltered entrance.

This will take you into the Battle Frontier gate, which has several NPCs behind two counters on the sides of the entrance hall.

Leave through the opposite end of the entrance hall to get to the actual Battle Frontier grounds.

From here, you will see a set of stalls not far from the entrance. These stalls carry different kinds of items that you can get by exchanging Battle Points.

Using Will-O-Wisp

Type Fire
Category Status
Power – – –
Accuracy 75
PP 15

Will-O-Wisp is a Fire-type status move that inflicts a burn on your opponent.

A burn status will deal a fixed amount of damage each turn. It will also cut a Pokémon’s Attack stat in half the entire time that it’s burned.

Note #1: Pokémon with the Ability “Guts” will not be affected by the 50% Attack reduction of a burn. They will still gain a 50% increase to Attack.

Note #2: Fire-type Pokémon cannot be burned. This means Will-O-Wisp will fail when used against Fire-type Pokémon.

Key Takeaways:

  • Will-O-Wisp’s regular burn damage is very valuable. The burn status comes with a 50% Attack decrease, which is no small amount. And the consistent HP loss per turn can make all the difference in survivability.
  • Burns can be inflicted on all Pokémon types except Fire-types. This means that you can effectively cripple most physical attackers that aren’t a Fire-type using Will-O-Wisp if it succeeds.
  • Will-O-Wisp is great for bulky Pokémon. A Pokémon with great defensive stats will be able to survive hits even when they are outsped. This means more chances at landing Will-O-Wisp and maybe even passing burns to multiple opponent Pokémon.

Here’s a small list of Pokémon that could be worth teaching Will-O-Wisp to:

  • Arcanine
  • Dusclops
  • Dusknoir
  • Weezing
  • Gengar
  • Mismagius
  • Gardevoir
  • Rotom
  • Spiritomb
