In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, there is only one Big Root to obtain. You can get it by showing off any Grass-type Pokémon in your party to a little girl NPC located on Route 123.
Her location is a bit out of the way, so we’ll show you exactly how to reach her with screenshots below.
The Big Root Location (Step-by-Step)
Route 123 is a long route connected to Route 118 in the west and Route 122 in the northeast.
When you enter Route 118, you’ll notice some ledges in the middle of Route 123 that prevent you from traveling west to east. But the NPC you’re looking for is on the eastern side of Route 123.
This means you’ll have to visit Route 122 first, and then enter Route 123 from there to explore the route in its entirety. The little girl that gives you the Big Root is on Route 123’s east side, so you’ll have to enter Route 123 through its northeast entrance (which we’ll cover below).
Before heading there, here’s what you have to do first:
- Get any Grass-type Pokémon into your party
- Have Access to Route 121
- Bring a Pokémon with Surf
If you’re all set, head over to Route 121.
Step 1: Start following the path heading east.
Step 2: Head down the stairs, and use the route’s south exit.
Step 3: Use Surf on Route 122.
Step 4: Follow the path heading south until Mt. Pyre’s entrance is visible.
Step 5: Disembark on the opposite side of Mt. Pyre’s entrance. This will bring you onto Route 123 — just keep going south from here.
Step 6: Talk to the little girl on the right beside the berry trees. Once you show her the Grass-type in your party, she’ll give you the Big Root held item.
How Big Root Works
If a Pokémon holding a Big Root uses a move that drains HP, it restores 30% more HP than normal. All of the moves listed below are classified as draining moves:
Move | Type | Power | Accuracy |
---|---|---|---|
Absorb | Grass | 20 | 100% |
Drain Punch | Fighting | 75 | 100% |
Draining Kiss | Fairy | 50 | 100% |
Dream Eater | Psychic | 100 | 100% |
Giga Drain | Grass | 75 | 100% |
Horn Leech | Grass | 75 | 100% |
Leech Life | Bug | 20 | 100% |
Mega Drain | Grass | 40 | 100% |
Oblivion Wing | Flying | 80 | 100% |
Parabolic Charge | Electric | 65 | 100% |
Additionally, status moves that restore HP (like Leech Seed, Ingrain and Aqua Ring) also work with Big Root, making the user regain 30% more HP than it otherwise would.
In competitive battles, the Big Root is almost never used. It is overshadowed by Leftovers, a better held item for recovery. Even a Sitrus Berry is a lot better in most situations.
So it would be better to boost the damage you deal from draining moves to increase healing than running Big Root as a held item.
