While there are a lot of ways to increase your Pokémon’s happiness/friendship, the fastest method for maxing it out is by feeding your Pokémon up to 25 EV-reducing berries. You can only obtain a limited number of them per day, so you should continuously be planting more of them over time.
But we’ll cover a list of all the best techniques you can use to rapidly increase your Pokémon’s happiness.
Methods to Increase Happiness
The Happiness/Friendship Value is a hidden value from 0 to 255. This determines how much you’ve befriended your Pokémon.
Everything listed below will increase a Pokémon’s Happiness Value by a certain amount.
Be sure to do as much of the following to speed up the process of maxing out its happiness value:
- Battle a Gym Leader or Champion
- Capture them in a Luxury Ball
- Feed it EV-reducing berries (Grepa, Hondew, Kelpsy, Pomeg, Qualot, Tamato Berry)
- Give it massages from the Masseuse in Mauville City or from Super-Secret Bases
- Give it Rare Candies
- Give it Vitamins (Calcium, Carbos, HP Up, Iron, PP Max, PP Up, Protein, Zinc)
- Level up the Pokémon
- Make it Hold the Soothe Bell
- Walking (every 128 steps has a 50% chance of increasing the friendship value by 1)
However, the fastest way to max out a Pokémon’s happiness is by feeding it 20-25 EV-reducing berries (depending on its base happiness).
EV-reducing berries are obtainable from the Berry Master, an NPC located on Route 123 who gives out two rare berries each day.
Outside the Berry Master’s house are 4 plots of land where you’re free to plant berries. When you first arrive in his garden, fully-grown EV-reducing berries will be ready to harvest.
Tip: To avoid lowering your Pokémon’s happiness value, don’t make them faint or feed them any bitter medicine (Energy Powder, Energy Root, Heal Powder, Revival Herb).
Happiness Checker Location
If you want to know if your Pokémon’s happiness is at max, just talk to an NPC in the southwestern house at Verdanturf Town. She will tell you how friendly your Pokémon is with various statements.
Here’s a table of each Happiness Checker statement and what value it corresponds to.
Statement | Value |

Purpose of Increasing Happiness
There are a handful of advantages to maxing out a Pokémon’s happiness. For example, the move Return will have its maximum base power at max happiness, and some Pokémon will only evolve once they’re past a certain happiness level.
Some move tutors in Hoenn will also only teach moves to Pokémon at max happiness. These include move tutors for the following moves:
- Draco Meteor
- Blast Burn
- Frenzy Plant
- Hydro Cannon
- Fire Pledge
- Grass Pledge
- Water Pledge
And exclusively in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, having three Pokémon at max happiness will unlock the Nameless Cavern, the location where Azelf, Mesprit, and Uxie can be caught.
