How To Get TM20 Safeguard in Pokémon ORAS

Using TM20 Safeguard in battle (Pokémon Alpha Sapphire)

TM20 Safeguard can be bought for 10,000 Pokédollars on the fourth floor of the Lilycove Department Store. Both clerks on the department store’s fourth floor also sell other TMs.

When Safeguard is used, the user and its party members are protected from incoming status conditions for five turns. However, moves, abilities and items that inflict status conditions on the user will still do so.

While its usefulness is somewhat limited, Safeguard can counter stall teams by protecting your team from moves like Toxic and Will-O-Wisp.

TM20 Safeguard Location

The Lilycove Department Store is a multi-level PokéMart located on the north side of Lilycove City, a coastal city east of Route 121. If you haven’t been to Lilycove City yet, make sure you’ve got two things:

  • Obtained the sixth Gym Badge from Winona, the Gym Leader from Fortree City
  • Explored Route 121

When you’re all set, head to Lilycove City’s entrance through Route 121’s east exit.

Once you’re in Lilycove City, here’s where to buy TM20 Safeguard in Lilycove Department Store:

Safeguard is a Normal-type Status move that protects the user and its team from being inflicted by the following status conditions for five turns:

  • Burn
  • Freeze
  • Paralysis
  • Poison / Bad Poison
  • Sleep
  • Confusion

Status Moves inflicted from abilities Effect Spore, Flame Body, Poison Point and Static will also be blocked.

However, self-inflicted status conditions from moves and Outrage and Petal Dance will still confuse you. Items like the Flame Orb and Toxic Orb will still inflict the corresponding Status conditions, as well.

It’s also good to know that using Safeguard while having an active status condition will not remove it.

Overall, Safeguard is a very situational move.

While it can be perfectly timed to make your opponent waste his/her turn using Toxic or Will-O-Wisp, this rarely happens.

Safeguard is best used as a precaution before switching in your team’s main sweeper. This is helpful because status conditions like Burn tend to completely shut down physical sweepers due to Burn’s additional effect of cutting your Attack stat in half (from physical moves).
