You can get TM44 Rest by talking to an NPC in his house on the east side of Lilycove City. You’ll need to go all the way east and then jump down a couple ledges to reach his house.
And if you speak to that same NPC a second time, he will also give you TM88 Sleep Talk.
Using Rest fully restores the user’s health and heals any status conditions, then it puts the user to sleep.
Recovery moves like Rest will always have a place in competitive battles. It’s an excellent move for bulky Pokémon to make them even harder to take down. It would also be a good idea to equip a berry that can wake up your Pokémon from sleep.
TM44 Rest Location (Step-by-Step)
In the easternmost part of Lilycove City, there’s a house with two men inside. Talking to the man on the right will get you TM44 Rest. He will also give you TM88 Sleep Talk if you talk to him again.
If you haven’t been to Lilycove City yet, make sure you’ve first:
- Obtained the sixth Gym Badge from Winona, the Gym Leader from Fortree City
- Explored Route 121
If you’re all set, head to Lilycove City’s entrance by going east from Route 121. Or you can just fly to the city to get there faster!
Once you’re in Lilycove City, here’s how to find the particular house you’re looking for:
Step 1: Head east until you pass by Lilycove City’s Pokémon Center.

Step 2: Before you climb up the staircase next to the PokeCenter, be prepared to battle your Rival (if it’s your first time here).

Step 3: After you win the battle, climb up the staircase.

Step 4: Then follow the path heading east.

Step 5: Jump down two ledges. This should lead you to a house with a blue roof.

Step 6: Enter the house on the right.

Step 7: Talk to the man on the right and he’ll give you TM44 Rest. While you’re here, you can talk to him a second time to get TM88 Sleep Talk.
Both are free!

TM44 Rest Details + Uses

TM44 Rest is a Psychic-type Status move that makes the user fall asleep for two turns and fully restores its HP. It also heals any other status condition the user might have had.
Tip: The move will fail if the user is at max HP, already asleep, or if it’s unable to fall asleep.
Rest is a good recovery move. Unlike other recovery moves like Roost or Wish, most Pokémon can learn Rest. This makes it a great option for tanks that lack recovery options.
However, Rest does make your Pokémon vulnerable to attacks for two turns. So if you’re planning to learn Rest on your Pokémon, try to employ either of the following strategies:
Strategy #1: Rest + Chesto/Lum Berry

Item Name | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Chesto Berry | Berry | The holder wakes up if it’s asleep. Single use. |
Lum Berry | Berry | The holder cures itself from any status condition (including confusion). Single use. |
By using Rest and holding either berry, you’ll immediately wake up from sleeping. However, you can only wake up from a single use of Rest each battle.
If you opt to use the Lum Berry, remember that it will heal the first status condition inflicted on your Pokémon. It might cure another status condition first before you get to use Rest. That’s why some players tend to use Chesto Berry to cure Rest’s sleep instead.
Strategy #2: Rest + Sleep Talk/Snore

Move Name | Move Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Sleep Talk | Normal | While the user is asleep, the user randomly uses one of its other moves. |
Snore | Normal | While the user is asleep, this move deals damage. This can make the target flinch. |
Alternatively, you can use a more aggressive strategy to combo with Rest.
Using Sleep Talk or Snore allows you to attack while being asleep. Though Sleep Talk is almost always better than Snore in most situations.
Sleep Status Condition Details

The Sleep status condition prevents Pokémon from making a move for 1-3 turns (2 turns if it’s self-inflicted by Rest). A sleeping Pokémon’s sleep counter is not reset when it’s switched out.
There are plenty of moves and Abilities that put opponents to sleep. Moves like Spore and Yawn are very popular in competitive battles.
Some moves and Abilities even directly interact with the Sleep status condition.
Here’s a list of Abilities that interact with Sleep:
Ability Name | Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Bad Dreams | Ability | As long as the opposing Pokémon is asleep, they will lose 12.5% of their max HP at the end of each turn. (Darkrai’s signature Ability) |
Early Bird | Ability | Wakes up twice as fast from sleep |
Insomnia | Ability | Pokémon with this Ability cannot fall asleep |
Sweet Veil | Ability | This Pokémon and its allies cannot fall asleep |
Vital Spirit | Ability | Pokémon with this Ability cannot fall asleep |
And here’s a list of moves that interact with Sleep:
Move Name | Move Type | Description |
---|---|---|
Dream Eater | Psychic | If the target is asleep, this move deals damage and heals the user for 50% of the damage dealt. |
Nightmare | Ghost | As long as the opposing Pokémon is asleep, they will lose 25% of their max HP at the end of each turn. |
Sleep Talk | Normal | While the user is asleep, the user randomly uses one of its other moves. |
Snore | Normal | While the user is asleep, this move deals damage. This can make the target flinch. |
Uproar | Normal | Deals damage and locks the user into using this move for 3 turns. No Pokémon can fall asleep during this time. |
Wake-Up Slap | Fighting | Deals double damage against sleeping targets. This also wakes up the target. |
Worry Seed | Grass | Changes the target’s Ability to Insomnia, preventing them from falling asleep. |
