You can obtain TM56 Fling by talking to an NPC in the northwestern house in Pacifidlog Town. When you’re inside the house, speak to the man facing the window to get the TM for free.
When Fling is used in battle, the user throws its held item, dealing damage based on which held item was thrown. Out of all the items in the game, the Iron Ball deals the most damage with Fling.
Some other items like the Toxic Orb or King’s Rock have special effects when flung.
Since your held item gets flung when using the move, you can only use Fling once per battle. This severely limits the move’s usefulness.
TM56 Fling Location (Step-by-Step)
Pacifidlog Town is an optional location that can be accessed by surfing west of Route 131.
In the house northwest of Pacifidlog Town’s Pokémon Center, a man will give you the TM for Fling if you talk to him. You can go there as soon as you have access to the town.
If you haven’t been to Pacifidlog Town yet, make sure you’ve first:
- Obtained the sixth Gym Badge from Winona, Fortree City’s Gym Leader
- Defeated Team Aqua/Magma’s Admins in their hideout near Lilycove City
- Taught a Pokémon HM03 Surf
And here’s a quick guide on how to get to Pacifidlog Town for the first time:
Step 1: Start at Lilycove City’s shore on the right side, standing at the water’s edge. Then use Surf on the water (facing right).

Step 2: Continue surfing east past Route 124 until you reach Mossdeep City.

Step 3: Once you’re in Mossdeep City, head to its south shore.

Step 4: Start surfing south to exit Mossdeep City.

Step 5: When you reach Route 127, turn left and then continue surfing south.

Step 6: Head south past the small atoll island on Route 128.

Step 7: Turn left once you reach Route 129.

Step 8: Continue surfing west along Route 130 and Route 131.

Step 9: Surf west until you reach Pacifidlog Town’s Pokémon Center.

Step 10: Once you’re in Pacifidlog, walk directly west of the Pokémon Center and enter the house on the upper left.

Step 11: Talk to the man facing the back wall to obtain TM56 Fling.

TM56 Fling Details + Uses

Fling Move Details | |
---|---|
Type | Dark |
Category | Physical |
Power | – |
Accuracy | 100 |
PP | 10 (max. 16) |
Fling is a Physical Dark-type that deals damage, but its power is based on the user’s held item.
After using Fling, the item is consumed. This means you can only use Fling once unless you recover the lost item with the move Recycle or the ability Harvest.
Fling’s base power varies from 10-130, and every item in the game has an assigned value that determines Fling’s base power. A lot of items even have special effects which trigger when flung.

The table below shows the items that can be flung, their base power, and their effects:
Item | Base Power | Fling Effect |
---|---|---|
All Berries | 10 | Applies that berry’s effect to your opponent |
Flame Orb | 30 | Burns the target |
Iron Ball | 130 | – |
King’s Rock | 30 | Makes the target flinch |
Light Ball | 30 | Paralyzes the target |
Mental Herb | 30 | Cures the effects of Disable, Encore, Heal Block, Infatuation, Taunt, and Torment from the target |
Poison Barb | 70 | Poisons the target |
Razor Fang | 30 | Makes the target flinch |
Toxic Orb | 30 | Badly poisons the target |
White Herb | 10 | Restores the target’s lowered stats |
Every other item | 10-100 | – |

Overall, Fling is a gimmicky move that’s unpredictable because of all the possible effects it could have.
But even putting that aside, it’s not a good move worth using simply because you can only use it once per battle.
Tip: Use Fling with the move Acrobatics, a move that doubles in power when you don’t have a held item. Pokémon like Gliscor can fling a Toxic Orb on one turn and use a boosted Acrobatics on the next.
