To get TM77 Psych Up, you’ll need to visit a Psychic NPC on a small island on Route 133 (west of Pacifidlog Town). To reach the island, you’ll need to use Surf to navigate a series of water currents that start from Route 132.
Psych Up is a move that copies the target’s stat changes. Because it’s too situational, it’s a move that sees little to no play in competitive battles.
Additionally, it may not be particularly useful during your playthrough, as it’s rare for NPCs to use stat-boosting moves.
TM77 Psych Up Location (Step-by-Step)
You’ll get TM77 from an NPC on an island on Route 133. This is a water route in southern Hoenn, and it’s part of a trio of consecutive water routes west of Pacifidlog Town (along with Route 132 and Route 134).
You can’t travel east on these routes because the water currents are all heading west.
So getting this TM takes a bit of effort, but not too much. There are only a few prerequisites necessary to get TM77:
- You need access to Pacifidlog Town
- And you need a Pokémon that can use HM03 Surf
If you’re all set, fly over to Pacifidlog Town to get started.
Step 1: From the town’s Pokémon Center, start heading west by walking along the wooden logs.
Step 2: Once you reach the end of the wooden path, start surfing towards the west.
Surf in this direction until you exit Pacifidlog Town.
Step 3: Once you’re on Route 132, continue surfing westward again.
Step 4: When you see a huge section of water currents, head straight up to the north and ride the northernmost water current (highlighted below).
Step 5: Let the current sweep you around, and then once you can move again, continue on the linear path heading west.
Step 6: Keep surfing westward until you see another set of water currents.
At this point you’ll want to take the top-most water current (still heading west). We’ve highlighted the correct water current in the screenshot below.
Step 7: Once this water current drops you off, continue surfing to the west along this narrow path between some rocks.
Step 8: When you reach the end of the path, you’ll see a water current on your left-hand side.
Take this water current, which will take you to a small sandbar where you’ll encounter various trainers.
Step 9: Once you disembark onto the sandbar, turn south and take the bottom water current. This will push you towards the west.
You don’t have to battle any trainers on the sandbar if you don’t want to.
Step 10: You’ll be riding this current from the sandbar for a little bit of time. So you’ll find yourself unable to move for a while.
But soon you’ll arrive at a small island with a Psychic NPC who will give you TM77 for free.
Step 11: After this water current drops you onto a small island, start walking west one last time.
Step 12: You should run into an NPC with black hair and a white shirt. Talk to this NPC to obtain the TM for Psych Up.
Psych Up Details + Uses
Psych Up Move Details | |
---|---|
Type | Normal |
Category | Status |
Power | – |
Accuracy | – |
PP | 10 (max. 16) |
Psych Up is a Normal-type Status move that copies the target’s positive and negative stat changes. Specifically, this includes all changes from all of the following stats:
- Attack
- Defense
- Special Attack
- Special Defense
- Speed
- Accuracy
- Evasion
- Critical Hit Ratio
Additionally, Psych Up can bypass Protect.
This move has a highly situational effect, since it requires your current opponent to have a stat-boosting move for you to copy.
In a Singles battle, it’s generally more effective to use a different move that sets up your own stat boosts, rather than relying on Psych Up. As a result, Psych Up is not often used in competitive Single Battles.
However, Psych Up is slightly more usable in Double Battles.
Because the move can also target your ally, you can deliberately use beneficial stat-boosting moves to copy. Just make sure your Psych Up user is slower than your ally to boost both of their stats on the same turn.
Psych Up Moves to Copy
Tip: To maximize Psych Up’s effectiveness, it’s recommended to use it to copy moves that can boost multiple stats simultaneously, or moves that raise stats by several stages. Here are some suggestions:

Bulk Up | +1 Attack, +1 Defense |
