The only Life Orb in Pokémon Platinum is located on top of a hill toward the base of Stark Mountain’s exterior. You will need to be able to use Rock Climb and Surf to reach the item’s exact location.
As for this item’s uses:
The Life Orb is a Held Item that boosts the holder’s damaging moves by 30%, but also drains 10% of the holder’s maximum HP with each move it uses.
Life Orb Location (Step-by-Step)
The Life Orb is found on a hilltop on Stark Mountain in the northeast corner of the Battle Zone. It is unavailable until the post-game, so you’ll first need to get entered into the Pokémon League Hall of Fame and receive the National Pokédex.
You’ll also need two HMs to reach the Life Orb:
- Rock Climb
- Surf
Once you’re prepared and ready to head for Stark Mountain, Fly to the Survival Area’s PokéCenter and head east.
When you reach the eastern mountains, move southeast to get in front of them and walk through the tall grass.
Then use Rock Climb on the first rocky wall you encounter.
After Rock Climbing onto the terrace, climb down the rocky wall to your immediate east.
Move to the right on the new section you’re standing on, and that’s where you’ll find two more rocky walls (one going up, another going down).
Use Rock Climb on the rocky wall facing up to the north.
Once you’re up, just head up the stairs nearby and climb down the left-most rocky wall in this elevated area with two NPCs.
Now turn and head eastward and move through the grassy strip.
Go east until you reach the ocean, then use Surf and start heading northeast on the water.
When you reach the island with the house on it, step ashore.
Cut across the island to the eastern side and then use Surf on the water to the east.
Follow the water until you hit the dead end. Then step onto the land above you and head north.
Head northeast past the sign to enter Route 227.
When you go all the way up you should hit the side of a mountain with a jumpable obstacle.
Ride your Bicycle in fourth gear at full speed to jump the ramp and clear the boulder.
After that, keep going west and hop the second bike ramp too.
Then drop down the nearest ledge (pictured below). But make sure to only jump 1 ledge here (ignore the next ledge) and instead just head westward.
Go west until you hit a line of trees, then turn northward and approach the white-colored house.
Take a right turn and head up the long staircase to the east of the house.
Turn right at the top of the stairs and ride your Bicycle over the fallen log.
Once you reach the end of the log just keep going northward through the tall grass.
At the end of the grassy area you’ll see some ledges. Turn to the right and then hop down the two ledges nearby (pictured below).
Once you’ve hopped both ledges you’ll be in a narrow passageway with just one direction to move.
So head northward up the grassy path to the right of the Black Belt trainer.
Then head up the large staircase to the north.
At the top of the stairs, take a left turn and head towards the west, passing by the rocky wall.
Go to the end of this section of land and use Rock Climb on the second rocky wall just past the Ace Trainer.
When you reach the bottom of that rocky wall, use Rock Climb again on the next one over to the left (this time you’ll be going back up).
This wall will take you up a hill, and at the top you’ll find a Poké Ball item on the ground.
Pick up the item to get your Life Orb.
Note: This is the only Life Orb you can get in Pokémon Platinum.
Life Orb Details and Uses
The Life Orb is a Held Item that powers up the holder’s attacks, but it also siphons 10% of their maximum HP whenever they use a damaging move.
But even with that said, the Life Orb is one of the most popular held items in the Pokémon franchise.
It’s weaker than the Choice Band’s and Choice Specs’ 50% boost of the holder’s Attack and Special Attack stats, but it’s also far more versatile. This is because the Life Orb doesn’t lock the holder into only using a single move repeatedly.
Granted a 10% cut to HP seems like a hefty price. But it’s worth considering that with stronger attacks comes quicker knockouts as well.
It can be argued that the damage from Life Orb and the damage sustained from unnecessary attacks would be fairly equal.
Who To Give the Life Orb To
One of the best Pokémon to hold a Life Orb is an Alakazam with the Magic Guard Ability, which negates the 10% recoil per move.
Since Alakazam already has one of the highest Special Attack stats in the game, a free 30% boost could produce Psychic damage that borders on obscene.
