Calm Mind is basically the special version of Bulk Up, increasing Special Attack and Special Defense instead of Attack and Defense.

It is best learned by a Pokémon whose special stats are already fairly high, such as:

  • Gardevoir
  • Bronzong
  • Mismagius

Each use of Calm Mind boosts these Special stats by roughly 50%. So if a Pokémon is able to pull off using it twice, its Special Attack and Special Defense stats will be doubled.

On a Pokémon with already high stats, this could allow it to dominate the battlefield – especially if the opponent leans more toward special attacks.

Calm Mind also works well with Baton Pass, which allows you to switch Pokémon and pass all stat increases onto them. This is especially helpful when trying to use Calm Mind on a Pokémon that isn’t quite bulky enough to take many hits while setting up stat increase moves, like Alakazam or Gengar.

Another strategy would be to put the opponent to sleep with a move like Hypnosis, and then use Calm Mind a couple of times while they can’t attack. Substitute can also keep the user from being damaged while setting up Calm Mind.

It’s important to remember that Calm Mind will not alter a Pokémon’s physical attack, so only special attack moves will benefit from the stat increase.

Miscellaneous Information about Calm Mind:

  • Although it is not recommended due to the costliness of the TM, a copy of TM04 Calm Mind can be resold for 750 PokéDollars.
  • If Calm Mind is used in a Pokémon Contest, it earns the user no Appeal Points, but the user’s score will double in the next turn.
