Safeguard is a non-damaging Normal-type status move. It erects a barrier around the user that prevents its team from being affected by certain status ailments.

Safeguard is mostly useful for defending against Pokémon who use status ailments as a primary strategy, such as those who try to poison you and stall behind moves like Substitute and Protect.

However, in a battle it’s arguably more effective to heal afflicted Pokémon than trying to prevent them from becoming afflicted in the first place.

In most cases, a status recovery move like Aromatherapy or Rest would be a better use of a move slot.

Miscellaneous Information about Safeguard:

  • Safeguard is removed if Defog is used on a Safeguarded Pokémon.
  • Safeguard protects a Pokémon from being confused by a Figy, Wiki, Mago, or Aguav Berry.
  • TM20 Safeguard can be resold for 1000 PokéDollars.
  • If used in a Pokémon Contest, Safeguard earns the user 2 Appeal Points and prevents the Voltage from going up in the same turn.
