Secret Power Details and Uses

In-game description of TM43 Secret Power.

Secret Power is a damage-dealing Normal-type physical move. It also has a 30% chance of causing a secondary effect that changes depending on the battle environment.

Secret Power Move Details
Type Normal
Category Physical
Power 70
Accuracy 100%
PP 20 (max. 32)

Secret Power’s secondary effect is dependent on the user’s environment during the battle, as listed below:

Environmental Conditions’ Effects on Secret Power
Terrain Effect
Building/Link battle Causes paralysis
Distortion World
Sand, plains, and puddles Lowers accuracy by one stage
Cave and rock Causes flinching
Grass Causes sleep
Water Lowers Attack by one stage
Snow Causes freezing
Ice
Marsh Lowers Speed by one stage

Secret Power might seem like a gimmicky move at first, and it is.

But it also has a ton of interesting uses when it comes to inflicting status ailments.

A 30% chance of inflicting any status condition during a damage-dealing move is quite high. And if you use it in an icy or snowy environment, Secret Power has the highest chance of freezing a Pokémon of any move in the game. Still, a 30% chance of sleep or paralysis is also excellent.

If Secret Power is taught to a Normal-type Pokémon to benefit from STAB damage, it basically becomes a 115 base power move with a nearly one-in-three chance to inflict some of the game’s most debilitating status conditions.

Miscellaneous Info about Secret Power:

  • TM43 Secret Power can be sold for 1000 PokéDollars, although this isn’t recommended due to its scarcity.
  • If Secret Power is used in a Pokémon Contest, it will earn the user 2 Appeal Points and mix up the contestant order in the next turn.
