In general, Skill Swap is more of a fun, gimmicky move than a useful one.

The turn that is spent swapping Abilities would usually be better suited for setting up status moves or landing attacks.

An exception would be if the user’s Ability acts as a hindrance to the user.

For example, Slaking is a Pokémon with an extremely high base Attack stat. But its Ability, Truant, causes it to waste every other turn loafing around – severely affecting its performance.

Not only would Skill Swap gain Slaking a new Ability, it would force the self-sabotaging Truant Ability on its opponent.

Miscellaneous information about Skill Swap:

  • The Abilities Wonder Guard and Multitype are not affected by Skill Swap.
  • If a Pokémon affected by Skill Swap is switched out of battle, it will regain its original Ability.
  • Although not recommended due to its scarcity, TM48 Skill Swap can be sold for 1500 PokéDollars.
  • If used in a Pokémon Contest, Skill Swap earns no appeal points, but steals the Voltage of the last Pokémon to act.
