Focus Blast is a damage-dealing Fighting-type special move with an extremely high base power but a low accuracy stat. It also has a 10% chance of lowering the opponent’s Special Defense.

Power 120
Accuracy 70%
PP 5 (max. 8)

At first, Focus Blast seems like just one more classic example of a high-powered move that has a high chance of missing the target.

But there are a few interesting details about this move that could help it factor into unexpected strategies.

#1: Fighting-type special moves are extremely rare. And the ones that do exist can generally only be learned by a small group of Pokémon.

Not only can a wide range of Pokémon use Focus Blast, but a wide range of non-Fighting-type Pokémon have access to the move as well. This can improve a team’s type coverage drastically (as well as throw more than a few opponents’ strategies off).

#2: Teaching Focus Blast to a non-Fighting Pokémon with a high Special Attack stat (like Gengar, Alakazam, or Slowking) gives them a wildly powerful attack of a type that’s super-effective against five other types.

This is especially useful when pitted against the trickier types like Dark and Steel.

That said, whether or not this wide coverage is worth the 70% accuracy stat is something you’d need to decide for yourself.

Though it should be noted that giving the user a Wide Lens to hold will bring the accuracy up to 80%.

Miscellaneous Information about Focus Blast:

  • Focus Blast will not affect a Pokémon with the Bulletproof Ability.
  • When used in a Pokémon Contest, Focus Blast earns the user 2 Appeal Points, plus 2 bonus Appeal Points if the user is the first to act in that turn.
  • TM52 Focus Blast can be resold for 2750 PokéDollars.
