Thunder Wave Details and Uses

Thunder Wave is a non-damaging Electric-type status move that paralyzes the target.

Type Electric
Category Status
Power
Accuracy 100%
PP 20 (max. 32)

The paralysis status effect cuts the afflicted Pokémon’s Speed stat by 75%, and adds a 25% chance during every turn that they will be stricken with full paralysis – this renders the Pokémon unable to move for that turn.

This makes paralysis one of the most debilitating status ailments in the game, despite not inflicting any damage.

It’s the perfect status condition to inflict on a Pokémon whose Speed stat is one of its biggest strengths.

Thunder Wave is slightly more useful now than in later games, in which its accuracy is cut by 10%.

Miscellaneous Info about Thunder Wave:

  • Thunder Wave is ineffectual against Ground-type Pokémon, who cannot be paralyzed by Electric-type moves.
  • The Ability Magic Guard will prevent a Pokémon from becoming fully paralyzed.
  • A copy of TM73 can be resold for 1000 PokéDollars, although this is not recommended due to the initial costliness of the TM.
  • If Thunder Wave is used in a Pokémon Contest, it will earn the user 2 Appeal Points and prevent the Voltage from going down in that turn.
