In this guide we’ll cover the three main methods of collecting Lumber and Material Stone, including tips on:
- The main locations to find the most Lumber/Material Stone
- How to buy Lumber/Material Stone from Arthur
- How to farm Lumber/Material Stone with Shining/Twinkle Seeds and Dungeon Flowers
All Lumber/Material Stones
Branch, Broken Stump, Stump, Stone, Clay Stone, and Rock…. What’s the difference?
The only difference between each material source is the number of swings it takes before the source disappears completely.
Each source gives the following amount of Lumber:
Lumber Sources | |
---|---|
Branch | 1 Lumber |
Broken Stump | 3 Lumber |
Stump | 9 Lumber |
And the following amount of Material Stone:
Material Stone Sources | |
---|---|
Stone | 1 Material Stone |
Clay Stone | 3 Material Stone |
Rock | 9 Material Stone |
Unlike some of the former Rune Factory games, you don’t need to upgrade your axe to be able to chop broken stumps and stumps in RF4. Instead, you can do so from the beginning of the game.
Keep an eye out on your stamina, though!
Chopping stumps is an easy way to drain your stamina quickly. If you aren’t careful, you might faint and wake up with a pricey bill from the Tiny Bandage Clinic.
Farming Method 1: Clearing Daily Spawns In Certain Areas
The most consistent way to get Lumber/Material Stone is by checking the areas where stumps and stones spawn the most and clearing them out daily.

Stumps, stones, and collectible plants are constantly spawning around the world, though not at a fast enough rate to merit multiple trips to the same location in a day.
If you have some extra RP lying around after completing your daily tasks, try checking out these locations to keep your Lumber/Stone Box replenished!
Best General Locations (Overview)

Here is a general overview of the most recommended locations for farming Lumber and Stone:
- Summer Field
- Autumn Field
- Winter Field
- Spring Field
- Path to Leon Karnak
- Cedar Tree
- Area near Winter Field
Many of these locations can be warped to by using the Airship after acquiring your Airship License.

Below are some screenshots of the areas mentioned above.
Location 1: Selphia Farm

Selphia Farm, when it’s not filled with crops, is a great source for farming Lumber and Material Stone. It’s a good idea (especially early game) to keep your fields clear to make room for more stone/stumps to spawn!
Note: Later in the game, you can also expand your fields to add more fields to the right of the original Selphia Field. You can find this option under the “Developments” tab at the Order Symbol.
Location 2: Spring Field

Note: Spring Field is only available after completing the First Arc of Rune Factory 4.
Location 3: Summer Field

Location 4: Autumn Field

Location 5: Winter Field

Location 6: The Path Leading to Leon Karnak

The path leading to Leon Carmak is a good place to check for the last few pieces of Lumber or Material Stone that you need.
Fly to the Obsidian Mansion and then head east until you hit the bridge to start farming. Then head back towards the Obsidian Mansion and continue on to Leon Karmak, stopping at every branch, stump and stone you see.
Location 7: Cedar Tree

The Cedar Tree is a reliable resource for farming Lumber.
But you can also pick up a few Material Stones along the way!

Location 8: Areas Near Winter Field
There are also some key locations that spawn stones near the Winter Field, don’t miss these spots while you’re in the area.

Just in the lilypad area just below the Winter Fields, there are two stones that spawn in this location.

Silver Lake always has a few stones laying around as well!

Finally, the last place to check while you’re in the area is Silver Arch, a stone or two may be there.
When the Weather Calls for a Typhoon…

Although Typhoons usually are bad news for Rune Factory players, there is a glaring benefit to them.
Typhoons increase the spawn rate of items that can be found on your field – sometimes at the expense of your crops!
This means you can spend an entire day going between the locations mentioned above to farm for Lumber and Material Stone. Or pay them a visit the next day to see each location covered with farmable materials.
Farming Method 2: Arthur’s Trade Shop

While this is not the most guaranteed option, it’s great for players who have an abundance of cash and little resources.
Arthur sells Lumber and Material Stone for 500G each.
He also sells Branches and Stones for 100G each.

First, you have to visit Arthur while he is in his office at the Sainte-Coquille Manor. This can already be quite the task because Arthur does not have a fixed schedule.
Sometimes he shows up at 8am or 10am, and other days not at all!

To work around this, if you have Arthur above 3 FP, you can invite him on an adventure and bring him into his shop.
Once there, talk to him and he’ll have the same dialogue as if he were working.
Farming Method 3: Infinite Lumber/Stone Farming

Twinkle Seeds (Shining Seeds in the original Rune Factory 4 game) and Dungeon Seeds are trees that you can plant to farm Lumber and Material Stone respectively.
After the plant grows completely, you can use your axe or hammer to extract Lumber and Material Stone from it.
However, unlike Stumps and Stones, you can hammer Twinkle Trees and Dungeon Flowers until they have 0HP left.
Note: To check your plants HP, you’ll need to use a Magnifying Glass which can be purchased from the Sincerity General Store. You can also infuse the Magnifying Glass into a tool or armor to make viewing your plants’ stats easier.

In the GIF above, restoring the Twinkle Tree’s HP with a withered grass gave it 18 more HP.
Then after hitting a tree with the axe to retrieve a piece of Lumber, the Twinkle Tree’s HP dropped by 3.
In other words, you can restore a Twinkle Tree’s HP much faster than you can drain it, thus allowing you to farm it infinitely!
Note: Withered grass isn’t the only thing you can use to restore HP to your plants; you can also use corn and four-leaf clovers.
With your Twinkle Trees and Dungeon Flowers well taken care of, you’ll never be scrounging for materials again.
