Quick Guide
- Choose to play either as a male or a female.
- Pick a name for your character & enter your character’s birthday.
- Listen to Volkanon’s tutorial about saving and sleeping.
- Head to bed.
- Eat Clorica’s Apple Pie.
- Head to the field for Vishnal’s farming tutorial & name your farm.
- Speak to Venti and complete the first request.
- Complete the second request: place down furniture.
- Complete the third request: make lumber.
- Complete the fourth request: make a shipment.
- Complete the fifth request: give an item.
Prologue: Creating your Character
Rune Factory 4 starts off with you on a flying vehicle soaring in the sky. You’ll be prompted to pick between two choices:
- “I’m flyin’ high, baby!” (Male)
- “Goodness, I’m so high up!” (Female)
These are actually the options you’ll be given to choose whether you’ll be playing as a male or a female. Pick “I’m flyin’ high, baby!” to play as a male, or pick “Goodness, I’m so high up!” to play as a female.
Note: In Japanese, both options translate to “I’m on top of the sky right now!”, but they use the gendered pronouns “boku” for the male option and “watashi” for the female option. There is no English translation, which explains the bizarre options you’re given.
A cutscene will play out introducing the fighting mechanics of the game.
From here, equip your weapon and beat the two soldiers on the ship. After you defeat them, another cutscene will play.
A series of unfortunate yet comical events will cause you to fall off the ship and end up in Selphia Castle, where you’ll meet Venti (a.k.a. Ventuswill) and Volkanon.
At this point, you’ll need to pick a name and birthday for yourself.
After setting these up, you’ll continue your conversation with Venti and Volkanon. Proceed to your bedroom where Volkanon will teach you how to save your game.
Interact with the diary beside the bed to pick a slot for your game save.
You’ll then be taught how to sleep.
After that, Volkanon will want you to rest so that you can recover the HP you lost from your fall. Tuck yourself into bed and get some rest. You’ll need all the energy you can get, because the next day is packed with tutorials.
Farming 101
The next day, you’ll be woken up by Clorica.
After a short chat, she’ll hand you an apple pie to eat for breakfast. Go ahead and chow it down.
Once you’ve had your breakfast, go to the field for your farming 101 lesson with Vishnal.
To enter the field, take the door leading outside along the northern edge of your room.
Once you get to the field, Vishnal will offer to teach you how to grow crops on your farm.
You’ll also learn how to get your own tamed monsters in a monster barn.
If it’s your first time playing, it’s highly recommended that you listen to what Vishnal has to say. But it’s still your choice!
Whether or not you decide to do the tutorial, Vishnal will give you:
- A water pot
- A hoe
- And some Turnip seeds
It’s a good idea to plant these as soon as you can so you can reap the harvest and ship out produce for gold!
You’ll then be asked to name your farm.
After your time with Vishnal, he’ll tell you to speak to Venti.
Go back to the Castle: Dragon Room through the middle path along the south edge of the field area (pictured below).
Royal Duties: Taking on Requests
First Request: Come to the Order Symbol in the Castle Dragon Room
When you get to the Castle: Dragon Room, speak to Venti.
You’ll find out why you’re tasked with farming the fields in the castle and who the real prince is.
Regardless of how the conversation goes, you will end up taking the tasks supposedly entrusted to the prince.
Venti will explain how the Request Box works so that you can start earning Prince/Princess Points.
After listening to her, head outside and interact with the request box. You’ll get your first task, which is to visit the Order Symbol back in the Castle: Dragon Room.
Choose the option to “Write it down” to take the request, and then head back into the Castle: Dragon Room.
Interact with the Order Symbol and Arthur will come in to explain how to use it.
Arthur will then give you free princess points so you can try it out.
Go ahead and order the only option available, which is a new backpack.
Arthur will then give you more princess points to spend. He will ask you to order a festival to be held in town so you can attract more tourists.
Go ahead and make the order to complete the request (any of the festivals are fine).
Now that you’ve cleared your very first request, you’re free to progress in the storyline at your own pace.
To have the story play out, you’ll need to complete the story requests. These will be available to you by the following morning.
Tip: Get these requests done ASAP because you’ll get useful items as rewards for each request cleared. Some of these rewards are farm tools, so don’t go purchasing any from Bado or Blossom just yet.
Second Request: Place down furniture
Your next request will be to learn how to place down furniture.
Clorica will give you a storage trunk to place wherever you wish.
Once you have it where you want it, speak to Eliza and tell them you’ve gotten the hang of it. You’ll be rewarded with a calendar for completing the task.
Just like last time, this will be the only request you’ll get for the day. A new one will be available by the next morning.
Third Request: Make lumber
The next request requires you to chop lumber.
But don’t worry! You’ll be given a free axe to perform this task.
After you get your axe, equip it in your hand. Look for a branch, a stump, or a broken stump to hit with your axe.
You can find a bunch of them lying all over your farm.
One piece of lumber is all you need, so head to Eliza when you have it.
Forte will reward you with a Lumber/Stone Box where you can store the lumber you’ve chopped and the material stone you’ve mined.
When you’ve cleared this request, Eliza will give you a heads up that two requests will be available for you the following day.
Fourth Request: Make a shipment
The next request you’ll be given is to make a shipment.
You’ll be tasked to place one turnip in the Shipping Box. To make things simpler, Vishnal will give you a turnip for you to perform the task. How kind!
Note: Make sure not to lose it because you won’t be given another.
One Shipping Box can be found on your farm. More likely than not, this is the only one you’ll have at this point in the game.
Toss your turnip into the Shipping Box to complete the request.
After you’ve shipped your turnip, go back and talk to Eliza.
After talking to Eliza you will have completed the request, and more seeds will be available in the general store.
And if you’re feeling hard-working right away, go ahead and take a second request from Eliza.
Fifth Request: Give an item
Your next request will require you to learn to give an item to an NPC. In this case, you’ll be gifting a turnip to Clorica.
And to make things easier, a turnip will be given to you for this request. So just pick that up and head over to wherever the sleepyhead is currently at.
Once you hand Clorica the turnip, she’ll give you a sickle as thanks.
After picking the sickle up, you can go back to Eliza to complete the request.
This is the final request you’ll need to complete before the story leads you to your first dungeon: Yokmir Forest.
