SoS: FoMT Fences (What They Do + How To Build Them)

Creating a fence with Golden Lumber in SoS: Friends of Mineral Town

Fencing in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town serves to keep grass, debris, and livestock away from your crops. Technically you don’t really need fences, but they can add a decorative flair to your farm and keep the field organized!

There are 4 items that you can use for fencing:

  1. Branches
  2. Rocks
  3. Lumber
  4. Golden Lumber

Each fencing material has its pros and cons.

But to use any of them you’d follow the exact same process: just select the raw material from your inventory and place it directly into the ground in your field.

Debris as Fencing (Branches & Rocks)

Branches and rocks are simply debris that you can pick up from the farm and place into your inventory. Once you have enough of them, you should be able to just place them back onto the field in a pattern that you like.

The good thing about these materials is that they won’t decay, so they never need to be replaced.

However, they are debris, which means that they spread more debris over time and look kind of ugly.

This is a great option for early-game fencing, though. Specifically when you just need a temporary fix to keep your grass in a contained area.

Lumber & Golden Lumber as Fencing

The classic material to use for a regular fence is simply Lumber.

Lumber can be bought from Gotts for 50 G a piece, which is kind of expensive. Or you can get Lumber for free by using your axe on branches or stumps.

To use lumber as fencing, just select it from your inventory and place each piece individually on the field.

However, normal Lumber will decay over time and you’ll need to replace it eventually. You can tell the Lumber has decayed when it looks like it’s buried deeper into the ground.

Golden Lumber can be used the same way, except it never decays.

However, it costs 100,000 G per piece if you buy it from Gotts!

You can also get it as a reward from Mayor Thomas after completing his annual quest on Winter 2nd.

But it can be difficult to collect enough Golden Lumber to create an actual fence, so you’ll likely need to save a lot of money if you go that route.

The upside is that since your Golden Lumber will never decay or rot, your fences will be permanent.

What’s the Point of Fencing?

Generally speaking, the only reason to build a fence is to organize your field and keep your Grass contained to a certain area. Fences are not required at all, and you could play the entire game without ever adding any kind of fence to your field.

But since Grass Seedlings will slowly grow and take over nearby spots in the field, it can help to add fences to limit how far it’ll grow. Fences can also help limit weeds and debris too, so generally they just help your field look tidier.
