Lumber and Material Stone can be obtained by using the Hammer and Axe on stray Stones or Branches you find on the ground. Gotts will also sell both Lumber and Material Stone at his shop for 50 G.
Since there are new tree stumps and boulder debris that respawn every day on the map, you’ll never run out of Lumber and Material Stone for your building upgrades.
How To Get Lumber & Material Stone
The Axe will turn Branches/Stumps into Lumber, and the Hammer will turn Stones into Material Stone.
Just use those tools on the various debris you find around your farm for some early-game lumber/stone.
With your basic non-upgraded tools, you’ll only be able to destroy singular pieces of debris at a time.
Upgrading your tools at Saibara’s Forge will let you use them more efficiently and with increased power, like to break bigger boulders or large tree stumps.

Where To Find Stones & Stumps
Method #1: Your Farm
The very first place you’ll be able to find Lumber and Material Stone at the start of the game is your own farm.
Once you arrive in Mineral Town, you’ll wake up to an overrun field chock-full of debris like grass, branches, stones, and boulders.
One of the first tasks you have to undertake as the new farm owner is to clear out this field and make it suitable for planting crops. As you slowly start to tidy up, you’ll likely find a lot of Lumber or Material Stone in your inventory at the end!
Your backpack can only hold stacks of 9 items, but you can keep stacks of 999 in the farmhouse’s cabinet.
Method #2: Map Spawn Locations
There are other places where you can find stumps and large boulders all around Mineral Town.
They will typically respawn every couple of days, so you can keep harvesting Lumber and Material Stone without worrying about running out.
These areas on the map will constantly respawn stumps, boulders, and occasionally debris:
- Mother’s Hill
- Meadow
- South Forest
- Beach
Method #3: Buying from Gotts’ Workshop
If you don’t have the extra time or stamina to spend on farming for building materials, they’re also available at Gotts’ Workshop for 50 G each.
Lumber and Material Stone will be available at the very start of the game, and you can purchase an unlimited amount of each item.
Using Lumber & Material Stone
These two construction materials are used to purchase building upgrades and home renovations from Gotts.
Mostly every farm building upgrade will require some combination of these materials (along with some money as well).
Below is a table of all the upgrades you can get on your farm, and what you can use stone & lumber for in these upgrades.
