To use the sawmill, you will need to put in a number of logs into the machine, then play a tracing minigame to get out planks. These are used in several ship facilities and spirit houses as a key material.
In this guide we’ll cover everything you need to know about building, upgrading, and using the Sawmill.
To unlock the Sawmill, you will need to do two things:
- Recruit Atul on the ship
- Upgrade your Blueprint Station
Atul is the second spirit you’ll find (he’s in Barkensheim Creek), and he will immediately ask you to upgrade your blueprint station once he’s on the ship. This request is called “The Drawing Board.”
So head to Albert’s Shipyard and purchase the Hobbyist Blueprint Upgrade. This requires:
- 2 Maple Logs
- 1 Limestone
This upgrade unlocks the blueprints for the Sawmill (along with the Loom and Foundry), and Atul will teach you how to cut logs inside via the request “Woodwork.”
How To Build the Sawmill
|Sawmill Building Requirements|
|Material||Where/How to Get|
|14 Maple Logs||Maple logs are made by cutting down maple trees, found in:
|20 Linen Threads||Made by sewing linen fiber at the Loom.
Linen fiber is grown from Linen seed planted in the field, while the seeds can be brought from:
Like other ship facilities, you can build more than one Sawmill on the ship should you wish. However, building a new one doubles the cost of the materials you need until the fourth copy.
How To Use the Sawmill
Once you build the Sawmill, Atul will ask you to head inside with him so he can teach you how to use the machine. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Go down the first floor and interact with the machine.
Step 2: This will open your inventory, and you will need to choose which logs you want to cut. You can only cut one kind of log at a time, but you can increase the number of said logs up to as many as you like.
Step 3: Once you’ve chosen, confirm the logs. A minigame will then start.
Step 4: Using the red indicator in the machine, trace the yellow lines on each log that passes through. Tracing the whole dotted line leads to a max output of up to 3 planks, while missing the line will only make about 1-2 planks. All of the planks will automatically go to your inventory.
Step 5: Keep doing this until you cut all of the logs, and repeat the process as much as you need.
You also get 1 Sawdust with each log that’s cut.
Here’s a list of all the planks you can make inside the Sawmill:
- Oak Planks (made from Oak Logs)
- Maple Planks (made from Maple Logs)
- Ash Planks (made from Ash Logs)
- Pine Planks (made from Pine Logs)
Atul himself will cut logs inside the Sawmill when he’s in a good mood. So make sure his mood is always up by giving him hugs and food!
Sawmill Improvement Upgrades
Once you have a mailbox on your ship and once you’ve built and used the Crusher, a mysterious mail will appear on your ship. The mail will turn out to be a treasure map, with the coordinates pointing to X: 85, Y: 165.
Sail to these coordinates, and you should be able to fish out the Sawmill Improvement blueprints from the water. This blueprint requires:
|Sawmill Improvement Requirements|
|Material||Where/How to Get|
|8 Aluminum Ingots||Aluminum ingots are made by smelting aluminum ore at the Foundry.
Aluminum ore is mined from the Aluminum Dragon, found at X: -132, Y: 134.
|18 Maple Planks||Made by cutting maple logs in the Sawmill.
Maple logs are made by cutting down maple trees, found in:
|12 Lightnings in a Bottle||These are farmed via the Thunderstorms event that Atul introduces to you.|
|285 Glims||Acquired by completing requests, getting specific items, or selling items from your inventory.|
After the Sawmill gets upgraded, the maximum output of planks you can make goes up from 3 to 6 planks. And the minimum output gets increased from 1 plank to 3 planks.
Note: You will still just get 1 Sawdust with each log that’s successfully cut, even after the improvement.
