Surstromming is an acquired taste dish you can make in Spiritfarer. Its only ingredient is Herring, and this recipe is also Gustav’s favorite food.

What You Need

For this exotic dish, you will need:

  • The Cellar
  • Stanley
  • 1 Herring

Note: This is one of the very few dishes in the game that’s not made in the kitchen.

How To Build the Cellar

The Cellar is unlocked via the Master Blueprint Station.

To start, you’ll need to have the Master Blueprint Station. If you don’t have this yet, you can visit Albert’s Shipyard to purchase it.

This is the fourth and final upgrade you can get, and we’ve detailed all the required materials in our blueprint station guide.

Next, it’s time to find Stanley. Here’s how:

Step 1: Make sure you have already sent four spirits to the Everdoor. Since the Master Blueprint Station is a late-game upgrade, you should have already finished some of the spirits’ questlines.

Step 2: Fish for a mysterious seed with a mushroom icon. There’s no specific place to fish for this seed, you just have to complete the first step to activate it.

Step 3: Once you get the seed, plant it in your Garden and it will grow into Stanley.

Once Stanley is on the ship, just follow these quick requests of his:

  • Big Boy’s Room (1)
  • Big Boy’s Room (2)
  • Unnamed Request (Dust Shades Minigame)
  • Dr. Splash’s Strange Experiments
  • Junior Architectural Designer
  • Mysterious Word

After those are completed, Stanley will give you the “It’s Alive!” request. And you will find the Cellar building in your Blueprint Station.

We also have a separate guide on the Cellar, explaining how to get all the required materials and how to properly use the building.

Where To Get Herring

Herrings are one of the most common fishes in the game.

Herring can be caught anywhere and at any time via the fishing minigame.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Sit at the back of the ship so Stella can cast her line.
  2. Wait for a bite, before holding the interact button to start reeling in your catch.
  3. Once the line turns red, let go of the button for a few seconds. The line will go back to yellow, and you can start reeling in again.
  4. Keep doing this until you catch the fish.

Luckily, Herring is the most common out of all the fish in Spiritfarer. The quickest way to find them is in the starting area of the game, around Albert’s Shipyard or Hummingberg.

How To Cook Surstromming

Once you have your herring, take it to the Cellar and place it inside one of the compartments.

A timer will pop up at the top indicating how long you need to wait, and your Surstromming will be ready right after the timer ends.

Note: You can place up to five herrings at a time inside each compartment, but interacting with the compartment before the timer finishes will just de-age the items. Leaving any aged food inside the Cellar for too long will lead to an “expired meal.”

As an acquired taste dish, you can serve Surstromming to any of these spirits:

  • Atul
  • Gustav (Favorite Food)
  • Bruce & Mickey

Surstromming is Gustav’s favorite dish, so giving it to him will boost his mood instantly. And you’ll get perks from this, such as him playing music to boost the mood of other passengers, making you sushi, or giving you valuable items that you can sell for Glims.

Other than that, you can also sell Surstromming to Raccoon shops for 350 Glims each.
