Pokémon Platinum Luxury Balls: How They Work + All Locations

Getting a Luxury Ball inside the Pokémon Mansion

# Location Repeatable?
1 Purchased at the Sunyshore City and the Pokémon League Poké Marts for 1,000p each Yes
2 Solaceon Town—Given to you as a reward for bringing a requested Pokémon to the Pokémon News Press reporter Yes
3 The Pokémon Mansion—Found inside a Poké Ball in the third room in the western corridor No

The easiest way to stock up on Luxury Balls is to buy them from the Poké Marts in Sunyshore City or the Pokémon League—however, these shops won’t be accessible until late in the game. A slower (but far sooner) way to get Luxury Balls is by taking Pokémon requests from the Pokémon News Press reporter in Solaceon Town.

You can also pick up a single Luxury Ball in the third room of the Pokémon Mansion’s west wing.

What Are Luxury Balls?

Luxury Balls are special Poké Balls that cause Pokémon to become more friendly to you in a shorter amount of time.

More specifically:

Whenever a Pokémon’s happiness stat is raised (by doing things like grooming it or walking around with it for a while), an extra point will be tacked on to the amount of the increase.

Bear in mind that a Luxury Ball has the low catch rate of a basic Poké Ball.

Acquiring Luxury Balls

As their name suggests, Luxury Balls are highly valuable and scarce, with the most reliable methods of obtaining them becoming available only toward the end of the game.

The following sections list all the ways of acquiring Luxury Balls in Pokémon Platinum.

Method 1: Poké Marts (Repeatable)

There are two shops in Sinnoh that offer an unlimited stock of Luxury Balls, purchasable for 1,000p each. These shops are:

  • The Sunyshore Poké Mart
  • The Poké Mart inside of the Pokémon League

Both of these locations only open up toward the end of the main game. But they’re the only way to obtain Luxury Balls in bulk—which you’ll likely need to do, given Luxury Balls’ abysmal catch rate.

Method 2: Pokémon News Press (Repeatable)

A far more gradual way to get Luxury Balls is to bring specific types of Pokémon to the Pokémon News Press reporter in Solaceon Town as he requests them.

To take a News Press request, Fly to Solaceon Town and enter the Pokémon News Press building next door to the Pokémon Center.

You’ll find two journalists inside; the one on the left is who you’ll be speaking to.

Note: Save your game before talking to this guy.

The reporter will tell you he needs help writing an article, and he will task you with showing him a certain species of Pokémon that he can report on.

The Pokémon he asks for will always be a random species of Pokémon that you have seen or owned at some point.

The Pokémon that the reporter requests isn’t necessarily one that you currently own, but saving the game before speaking to him allows you to reset and try for an easier request.

When you get a request you can complete, go out and place that Pokémon in your party.

Then return to the News Press.

Note: Save your game before speaking to the reporter for the second time.

When the reporter sees you have fulfilled his request, he will experience what appears to be a moment of sublime inspiration.

As a reward for bringing him the Pokémon, the reporter will hand you a Heart Scale and three Poké Balls of a specific model.

The type of Poké Balls he gives you is random, but this is why saving your game beforehand is useful: it allows you to reset and try again until you receive the Poké Balls you want.

Do this until the reporter gives you the Luxury Balls.

The Pokémon News Press request can be repeated once per day.

While it is a slow method of obtaining Luxury Balls, it’s the only repeatable way of getting them in Pokémon Platinum without having to wait until the end of the game.

Method 3: Route 210 (Step-by-Step)

A single Luxury Ball can be found inside the Pokémon Mansion on Route 212.

But before you can visit the Pokémon Mansion, you’ll need to have visited Pastoria City at least once; the way to Route 212 will be blocked off until that point.

After that, the quickest way to reach the Pokémon Mansion is to start from Hearthome City and head south.
