FFXIV The Wreath of Snakes (Normal): Unlock + Trial Guide

Trial boss in Wreath of Snakes (Normal) in FFXIV

You can unlock the Level 70 normal-difficulty trial The Wreath of Snakes, also known as Seiryu NM, by accepting the Level 70 quest “Surpassing the Samurai” from Bunchin in The Ruby Sea (X:27.8, Y:16.4).

But this trial can only be unlocked after completing the Level 70 quest “The Fire-bird Down Below” and clearing Hells’ Kier.

  1. Complete the Level 70 quest “The Fire-bird Down Below” by clearing the Hells’ Kier trial.
  2. Accept the Level 70 quest “Surpassing the Samurai” from Bunchin in The Ruby Sea (X:27.8, Y:16.4)
  3. Speak with Genbu in The Reisen Temple (X:6.1, Y:6.1).
  4. Meet Seiryu at the Isle of Bekko in The Ruby Sea (X:37.3, Y:15.4).

Detailed Unlocking Guide

Start unlocking the trial by completing the Level 70 quest “The Fire-bird Down Below” and clearing Hells’ Kier.

Once you’ve done that, speak with Bunchin in The Ruby Sea (X:27.8, Y:16.4) to begin.

In this part of the questline, Bunchin will receive a missive informing you of Koryu’s imminent return and the sacred auspices will need your help in dealing with the threat.

Speak with Genbu in The Reisen Temple (X:6.1, Y:6.1) to continue.

As mentioned in the missive, Koryu’s wards are soon to break and the auspices will need Seiryu in the eventual battle.

Similar to what you’ve done for Byakko and Suzaku, you’ll need to quell Seiryu’s raging aramitama.

Soon after, he’ll approach you and Genbu and agree to battle at the Isle of Bekko. Finish the cutscene and talk to Seiryu in The Ruby Sea (X:37.3, Y:15.4).

Upon talking to Seiryu, another cutscene will trigger. Here he’ll reflect on his initial encounter with the legendary samurai Tenzen and the events that led to Tenzen’s demise at the hands of Koryu.

After the cutscene, The Wreath of Snakes will be unlocked. This trial requires at least a Level 70 Disciple of War or Magic job and an average item level of 365 to enter.

Phase 1: Serpent-eye or Onmyo Sigil

Rotation:

Fifth Element > Infirm Soul > Serpent-eye or Onmyo Sigil > Serpent Descending > Serpent-eye or Onmyo Sigil > Kuji-kiri.

  • Fifth Element: A room-wide AoE attack. Shield and heal through the damage.
  • Infirm Soul: A strong tankbuster attack on the primary target. Use mitigation skills and heal through the damage.

  • Serpent-eye Sigil: A large donut AoE that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Onmyo Sigil: A point-blank AoE that applies a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.
  • Serpent Descending: Up to four targeted AoEs on random players. Spread out to avoid overlap.

  • Kuji-kiri: Criss-cross AoEs that apply a stacking “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds.

Phase 2: Summon Shiki and Strength of Spirit

Rotation:

Summon Shiki > Red Rush (Aka-no shiki) x2 + Blue Bolt (Ao-no shiki) > 100-tonze swing (Iwa-no shiki) > Yama-kagura (Ten-no shiki) x4 + Kanabo (Iwa-no shiki) > Doro-no shiki + Numa-no shiki > Strength of Spirit.

  • Summon Shiki: Signals the spawn of untargetable shiki mobs that will also use AoE attacks.
  • Red Rush (Aka-no shiki): Two “Aka-no-shiki” mobs will tether to two DPS players for knockback attacks. Bait the tethers away from the group.
  • Blue Bolt (Ao-no shiki): A line stack marker on a random healer. Stack inside the marker if you’re not tethered to an “Aka-no-shiki.”
  • 100-tonze swing (Iwa-no shiki): A point-blank AoE attack that knocks players back.
  • Yama-kagura (Ten-no shiki): A column AoE that knocks players back.
  • Kanabo (Iwa-no shiki): The “Iwa-no-shiki” mobs will tether to two random players for massive frontal cone AoEs. Bait the tethers toward the sides after “Yama-kagura” goes off.
Three Doro-no shikis and one Numa-no shiki / Final Fantasy XIV
Three Doro-no shikis and one Numa-no shiki
  • Doro-no shiki + Numa-no shiki: Brown shikis that need to be killed before the “Seiryu’s Focus” gauge reaches 100. Each shiki will explode upon death for a room-wide AoE attack. Stagger the kills to avoid overlapping damage.
  • Strength of Spirit: A room-wide ultimate AoE attack based on the “Seiryu’s Focus” gauge. Survive the incoming AoEs and destroy the targetable mobs before the gauge reaches 100 to survive.

Phase 3: Forbidden Arts

Rotation:

Summon Shiki > Coursing River (Blue Orochi) > Forbidden Arts > Summon Shiki > Handprint (Yama-no-shiki) x2 > Fifth Element > Handprint (Yama-no-shiki) > Force of Nature > Serpent-eye or Onmyo Sigil > Serpent Descending + Kuji-kiri > Fifth Element > Infirm Soul > Fifth Element.

Immediately after “Strength of Spirit,” the arena will be transformed, causing all players to get knocked into the water. The water applies a constant “Vulnerability Up” debuff.

Every time you’re knocked out of the arena, you’ll also receive a stacking variant of the “Vulnerability Up” debuff for 60 seconds and be stunned for three seconds.

Run toward the snakes for “Coursing River”
  • Coursing River (Blue Orochi): Snakes will rush through the arena from one side, knocking players back on hit. Run toward the snakes to avoid getting knocked off. Knockback-immunity skills do not work for this mechanic.
  • Forbidden Arts: A two-hit stack marker on a random healer. Stand inside the marker to share incoming damage.
  • Handprint (Yama-no-shiki): A giant blue shiki will appear on the northern edge and slam its hand on one side of the arena. Anyone hit will receive a “Blunt Resistance Down” debuff, making the next “Handprint” attack hit even harder.

  • Force of Nature: The blue shiki will punch the center of the arena for a room-wide knockback attack. Anyone caught in the center AoE will instantly die. Stand near the edge of the center AoE or use knockback-immunity skills to avoid getting knocked off.

Phase 4: Repeating Mechanics

Rotation:

Summon Shiki > 100-tonze Swing (Iwa-no-shiki) x2 + Serpent-eye or Onmyo Sigil > Kanabo (Iwa-no-shiki) x2 > Red Rush (Aka-no shiki) x2 + Blue Bolt (Ao-no shiki) > Serpent Descending + Kuji-kiri + Yama-kagura (Ten-no-shiki) > Handprint (Yama-no-shiki) + Summon Shiki > Handprint (Yama-no-shiki) + Coursing River (Blue Orochi) > Handprint (Yama-no-shiki) > Force of Nature.

In Phase 4, you’ll face a similar rotation to Phase 2 with some additional mechanics in between. Handle incoming mechanics as you did in the previous phases.

Phase 5: Serpent Ascending

Rotation:

Serpent Ascending > Fifth Element > Serpent Descending + Kuji-kiri > Serpent-eye or Onmyo Sigil > Infirm Soul > Fifth Element > Coursing River (Blue Orochi) > Summon Shiki > Coursing River (Blue Orochi) > Forbidden Arts > Fifth Element x2 > Repeat from Phase 4.

After finishing the Phase 5 rotation, the fight will repeat from Phase 4 until the boss is defeated.

“Serpent Ascending” markers
  • Serpent Ascending: Four circle markers will appear around the arena. These markers will eventually explode into room-wide AoEs that apply stacking “Damage Down” debuffs for 30 seconds if left unattended. Have one player stand inside each marker to prevent the incoming AoEs.
