There are two ways to obtain TM29 Psychic in Pokémon Crystal, one of which is repeatable.

Method #1: You’ll get one copy of the TM from Mr. Psychic in his house east of Saffron City’s Pokémon Center.

Method #2: You can get unlimited copies of the TM at the Prize Corner next to Celadon City’s Game Corner. It’s available for 3,500 coins at the Prize Corner’s left window.

Prerequisites

Both methods of getting TM29 are in Kanto. So you’ll need to complete these prerequisites first:

  1. Obtaining all eight Johto Badges.
  2. Defeating the Elite IV and Champion Lance at the Indigo Plateau.
  3. Receiving the S.S. Ticket from Prof. Elm in New Bark Town.
  4. Boarding the S.S. Aqua to sail to Kanto’s Vermillion City.

The Celadon City Game Corner also requires you to pick up the Coin Case from the Goldenrod Underground, so make sure that’s in your bag before heading to Kanto.

Getting TM29 Psychic (Step-by-Step)

Method #1: Mr. Psychic in Saffron City

Step 1: You can find Mr. Psychic’s house by walking east from the Pokémon Center in Saffron City.

Just go all the way east until you see a house with a door and a sign out front.

Buying the Coins

You can exchange PokéDollars for coins at the Coin Counter in the northwestern area of the Game Corner.

Coins are somewhat pricey, costing 1,000 PokéDollars per 50 coins.

You’d need 70,000 PokéDollars to buy all 3,500 coins required for the Psychic TM.

The most efficient money farming method in Pokémon Crystal is defeating the Elite IV repeatedly. Each run should net you roughly 22,000 PokéDollars.

Beating the Elite IV three times for around 66,000 should get you very close to buying 3,500 coins. Considering the alternative is luck-based, this doesn’t sound too bad.

Gambling for the Coins

There are two games to play at the Celadon Game Corner:

  • Slot Machines: Bet one to three coins to get payouts of up to 300 coins (for a Triple 7). Some machines are “luckier” than others.
  • Card Flip: Try to identify a face-down card. You can bet in a bunch of configurations, but betting all three coins on a single card (x24) is more profitable in the long run.

Earning 3,500 coins will take a while either way, but a lucky Slot Machine will usually be the fastest option.

Tip: The 2nd Slot Machine in the third row from the bottom up is always lucky, but it’s only available in the Morning (4AM-10AM).

Getting Your TM

Once you have your coins just go next door to the Prize Corner to exchange your 3,500 coins for TM29 Psychic.

TM29 Psychic Details + Uses

Psychic Move Details
Type Psychic
Category Special
Power 90
Effect 10% chance of slightly lowering Sp. Defense.
Accuracy 100%
PP 10

Psychic is the second most-powerful Psychic-type move in Pokémon Crystal, surpassed only by Future Sight (110 Power).

That said, Future Sight takes three turns to hit, while Psychic brings the pain immediately.

It also has a small chance of lowering the opponent’s Sp. Defense. So generally speaking, Psychic is likely the best move you can get for any Psychic-type in your party.

Tip: You’ll achieve the highest damage by teaching Psychic to a Psychic-type Pokémon with high Sp. Attack and decent Speed. They’d be perfect for a sweeper role.

There are plenty of good candidates to learn Psychic in Pokémon Crystal. But here are some of the obvious best choices:

Pokémon Type Location
Alakazam Psychic Evolve Kadabra by trading.
Espeon Psychic Evolve Eevee with high Friendship during the day.
Starmie Water/Psychic Evolve Staryu with a Water Stone.
Exeggutor Grass/Psychic Evolve Exeggcute with a Leaf Stone.
