Where To Get the Vs. Recorder in Pokémon HGSS

At the gate before Violet City in Pokémon HGSS

The Vs. Recorder is given to you automatically by your rival (Ethan/Lyra) when you enter Violet City for the first time from Route 31. This is an unmissable key item, so to get it you basically just need to play through the game to the point when you’d reach Violet City (after getting the Mystery Egg from Mr. Pokémon’s House).

It’s not exactly a crucial key item that will see much use in a solitary playthrough, but it can be fun to re-watch some of your fights – especially if you’re into multiplayer battles.

Vs. Recorder Location (Step-by-Step)

Once you’ve delivered the Mystery Egg back to Professor Elm, you’ll return to Cherrygrove City with your starter Pokémon.

From here, your goal is to reach Violet City.

So let’s cover a step-by-step process on how to get there:

Step 1: From Cherrygrove City, take the north exit.

Step 2: Continue north, through the tall grass and up the stairs. Both staircases lead to the same place, so you can take either one.

Step 3: At the top of the stairs, continue north through the tall grass and past the house with the Apricorn Tree.

Step 4: Once you’re out of the tall grass, the path continues north, but there’s a split in the path.

We want to go towards the left side, opposite of Mr. Pokémon’s House.

Step 5: Continue up this western-side path.

Along this path are 3 Pokémon Trainers which you will need to battle, but they’re all very simple.

Details on each Pokémon Trainer’s team are listed below in order of appearance.

Rattata 4
Youngster Mikey

Tip: Both Youngster Joey and Bug Catcher Don can be avoided by walking behind them, but you will need to go through the tall grass in order to do so. Youngster Mikey is unavoidable.

Step 6: Moving north up the stairs just past Bug Catcher Don will put you onto Route 31.

Following the only available route will take you east through the tall grass, and then north towards Dark Cave.

Step 7: From the Dark Cave, continue on the route west until you reach the gate into Violet City.

Step 8: Go into the gate building. As you get near the entrance into Violet City, an event will trigger where Ethan/Lyra appears. They’ll then give you the Vs. Recorder.

How To Use The Vs. Recorder

The Vs. Recorder can save Pokémon Battles in wireless and wifi multiplayer mode, or at the Battle Frontier. You can also use it to share recorded battles to other players over wifi.

After the battle, the game will ask you if you would like to save a recording of the match. Selecting ‘Yes’ will record the battle.

Once recorded, the replay of the battle can be found by accessing the Vs. Recorder in the Key Items Pocket of your Bag.
