You’ll get the Dowsing Machine from your rival after you defeat them in a battle on Route 110. This battle is part of the main story, so the Dowsing Machine is an unmissable key item.
But before you can get the Dowsing Machine, you must complete the following requirements in Slateport City:
- Deliver the Devon Parts to Captain Stern
- Obtain the Contest Costume, the Contest Pass, and the Pokéblock Kit from Lisia
You’ll use the Dowsing Machine to find invisible items scattered across the map.
Obtaining the Dowsing Machine (Step-by-Step)
After you complete the above requirements & after you receive the Contest items from Lisia, head north to Slateport’s northern exit. You should arrive at Route 110.
Step 1: From the start of Route 110, head north along the dirt path.

Step 2: Turn left just before the cycling road gate and keep following the dirt path.

Step 3: Keep heading along the dirt path, and at the end turn north.

Step 4: Continue heading north, then stop once the route splits.
The PokéFan NPC is a trainer here, but she won’t battle you unless you interact with her.

Step 5: Turn right and continue moving away from the dirt path.
Tip: Make sure your team is fully healed. You’re going to battle your rival shortly up ahead.

Step 6: Keep heading right along the grass patches, and then turn north to keep following this path.

Step 7: Continue heading north and you will eventually run into your rival. They will challenge you to a battle after a brief dialogue.
Your rival’s team will change depending on your starter Pokémon:
- If you picked Treecko:
- Wailmer (level 18)
- Shroomish (level 18)
- Combusken (level 20)
- If you picked Torchic:
- Shroomish (level 18)
- Slugma (level 18)
- Marshtomp (level 20)
- If you picked Mudkip:
- Slugma (level 18)
- Wailmer (level 18)
- Grovyle (level 20)

Step 8: Defeat your rival. Then after the battle they will give you the Dowsing Machine as a reward.

How To Use the Dowsing Machine

The purpose of the Dowsing Machine is to help you locate hidden items in the overworld.
To get started, equip the Dowsing Machine from your bag. Once equipped, the Dowsing Machine will show up as these distinctive antennae on your head:

When there are no invisible items nearby, the antennae will remain colorless.
The Dowsing Machine’s color will change the closer you get to an invisible item. If there is one nearby, the antennae will immediately turn blue.

If you keep heading in the invisible item’s direction, the antennae will turn green.

As you get closer to the invisible item’s location, the antennae will turn yellow.

Once you’re facing directly in front of the invisible item from any direction, the antennae will turn red and start moving.

When this happens, press A to obtain the invisible item.
Note: The Dowsing Machine will not react to visible overworld items.
