How To Get & Use the Soot Sack (Pokémon ORAS)

Standing at the Glass Workshop on Route 113 (Omega Ruby)

You can get the Soot Sack from the owner of the Glass Workshop located on Route 113. You’ll gain access to this area after you beat the Mauville City Gym.

The Soot Sack is an optional key item used to collect volcanic ash on Route 113. You can then hand over the ash to the Glass Workshop owner, and he will use it to create battle items or decorations for your secret base.

Soot Sack Location (Step-by-Step)

In a typical playthrough, you’ll first arrive at Route 113 from the east. You’ll get here right after clearing Route 112 after leaving Mauville City.

So once you’re at Route 113, here’s where to go to get your Soot Sack:

Step 1: From the Route 113 entrance, head west past the first patch of tall grass.

Step 2: Continue heading west and you will be challenged by Youngster Neal. This battle is unavoidable, but his party is fairly easy with just two Pokémon:

  • Level 19 Electrike

Step 4: Once at the top of this hill, turn and head west once again.

Tip: There is a Ninja Boy trainer hiding under the third pile of ash (to your left). You can avoid this battle by taking the long way around, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 5: Continue heading west past the Parasol Lady trainer. You can also avoid this battle by waiting for her to face the opposite direction.

Step 6: Walk west to go past the Youngster trainer. You can avoid this battle as well by walking behind him (he’s not a spinner so he will stay still).

Step 7: Once you’re past the Youngster, keep going west and stick to the upper part of the Route.

Eventually you’ll arrive at the Glass Workshop.

How To Use the Soot Sack (Collecting Volcanic Ash)

You can collect volcanic ash from the piles of grey ash scattered around Route 113.

Simply walk or run through the piles and you will automatically collect the ash.

Each pile gives a random amount of ash, from 5 to 100 grams.

And if you find an item under the pile, this will randomly add between 3 and 4 grams.

Fake Ash Piles on Route 113

In total, there are eight piles of volcanic ash scattered around Route 113. However, two of them are fake piles with a Ninja Boy trainer hidden underneath.

Piles with hidden trainers do not give any volcanic ash and will disappear after the battle.

The first fake pile (mentioned in step 4 above) is located up the first set of stairs you climbed to reach Route 113.

All Glass Workshop Items

After collecting some ash, go back to the Glass Workshop and talk to the owner.

If you gather enough volcanic ash then you will be able to exchange it for any of the items listed in the table below.

Note: There is no way to check how much volcanic ash you have collected in your Soot Sack. The only way to check is to talk with the Glass Workshop owner and select an item you want. He will then tell you if you have enough ash, or he’ll inform you of how much more you need to collect.
