You can get both bicycles from Rydel’s Cycles, which is a store located in the eastern corner of Mauville City. Rydel will initially give you a choice between the Mach Bike or the Acro Bike.
So at first you’ll only be able to keep one bike at a time, and you’ll have to return to Rydel’s shop to swap between them.
But after the Delta Episode in the post-game, you can obtain both bikes simultaneously by advertising Rydel’s Bikes to three specific NPCs throughout the Hoenn region.
In this guide we’ll cover exactly when you can first get a bicycle, how each bike works, and how to get both bicycles together.
Rydel’s Cycles Location
You can find the bike shop within Mauville City on the east side.
Here’s a quick step-by-step of how to reach his shop:
Step 1: Start from the Mauville Pokémon Center located in the central plaza, then head to the east.
Step 2: Look for the plaza exit on the right-hand wall, then continue going east through this exit.
Step 3: After exiting the plaza, keep moving east and you’ll quickly find the bike shop in the corner. It has a green & white striped awning, and you should see bicycles in the shop window.
Getting Your First Bicycle
Once you reach Mauville City for the first time, you can head inside the bike shop and speak to the owner Rydel.
He will give you a bike for free, and initially you can choose between the Mach Bike or the Acro Bike.
Note: You can only keep one bike with you up until the Delta Episode. But you can still switch between both bikes at any point.
Each of the bikes has its unique advantages and features.
In the beginning it really won’t matter which one you choose, so pick whichever one best fits your needs (Mach for faster speeds, Acro for better handling).
Tip: As Key Items, the bikes can be registered to the Y button for instant use.
The Mach Bike
Being the fastest of the two bikes, the Mach Bike is great for open areas where you want to move fast. But it also lets you ride up the various muddy slopes you’ll find throughout Hoenn.
The Mach Bike handbook in the back of the bike shop provides the following information:
Section | Description |
---|---|
How to ride | Press the Control Pad or the Circle Pad to move while riding a bike. To stop, release the Control Pad or the Circle Pad. The bike will slow down before stopping completely. |
Tip on braking | The Mach Bike can’t stop very quickly due to its high speed. Release the Control Pad or the Circle Pad shortly before reaching your intended destination. |
Sandy slopes | Sandy slopes scattered across the Hoenn region can only be climbed while riding the Mach Bike. |
The Acro Bike
The Acro Bike allows better handling, but it also allows you to perform a wheelie with a bunny-hop. With this feature you can move across stepping stones to jump over ledges.
The Acro Bike handbook in the back of the shop provides the following information:
Section | Description |
---|---|
Wheelie | Press the B Button to lift the front wheel up while riding. |
Bunny hop | Hold the B Button to hop on the spot. Use this to hop across at stepping stones to jump over ledges. |
Jump | Press the B Button and the Control Pad or the Circle Pad at the same time to jump sideways or backwards to change directions. |
How To Change Bikes
At any point in the game, you can speak to Rydel again in Mauville City to switch to a different bike.
There is no limit to how many times you can change bikes. Although it does get easier once you unlock HM02 Fly so you can easily access Mauville City.
How To Get Both Bikes
After you finish the Delta Episode you’ll have access to the Battle Resort. At that point, you’ll be able to keep both the Mach Bike and the Acro Bike at the same time.
To get both bikes in ORAS, you have to show certain bikes (Mach or Acro) to three specific NPCs found across Hoenn:
- Show the Mach Bike to a Hex Maniac on Route 111
- Show the Acro Bike to a Bird Keeper on Route 119
- Show any bike to a Triathlete at the Battle Resort
We’ll show you step-by-step instructions on how to reach all three of these NPCs.
#1: Finding the Hex Maniac (Mach Bike)
The Hex Maniac is located on the Route 111 Desert. But before leaving to go speak with her, make sure you have the following:
- Mach Bike
- Go-Goggles
Step 1: Start from Route 111, then head northeast going up towards the desert.
Step 2: Once you’re in the desert, you will need the Go-Goggles to push through the sandstorm.
Continue heading north from here until you find a sandy slope.
Step 3: Ride up the sandy slope with your Mach Bike, then go east on top of the rock you just climbed.
Step 4: Keep moving east and you’ll quickly see an NPC with long black hair. This is the Hex Maniac you’re looking for.
Just speak to them and you’ll automatically show them your Mach Bike.
#2: Finding the Bird Keeper (Acro Bike)
The Bird Keeper you’re looking for can be found behind a series of bike rails on Route 119. To reach his location, make sure you can use the following:
- Acro Bike
- HM03 Surf
- HM05 Waterfall
- Devon Scope
Step 1: Fly to Route 119 and start here, then head all the way to the south until you reach the water.
Step 2: Use Surf facing towards the western-side of the water, then surf north until you reach a waterfall.
Step 3: Use Waterfall to climb up to the top.
Step 4: At the top of the waterfall, disembark on the land directly to your left. Then walk up the stairs towards the rails.
The path to the rails will be blocked by a hidden Kecleon, which can only be revealed by using the Devon Scope.
Step 5: After battling the Kecleon, use the Acro Bike to ride on the rails across the water.
You can jump sideways by pressing the B Button and the Control Pad or the Circle Pad at the same time.
Step 6: After crossing to the other side, head to the north and you’ll quickly see a couple other bicycle rails.
You want to ride the topmost rail at the very top, riding it towards the west.
Step 7: On the other side of the rail you should see the Bird Keeper NPC. Speak to them to show them your Acro Bike.
#3: Finding the Triathlete (Any Bike)
The Triathlete you’re looking for is at the Battle Resort.
After finishing the Delta Episode, Norman will give you an S.S. Ticket. With this ticket, you can travel to the Battle Resort on the S.S. Tidal from the ports in Slateport City or Lilycove City.
Note: We’ll give directions to the Slateport City harbor for this guide, but you could alternatively go to Lilycove instead.
And for this NPC you can bring either of the bikes with you.
Step 1: Start at the Pokémon Center in Slateport City and head northeast.
At the northeast corner of the city you’ll find Slateport Harbor.
Step 2: Head inside, then talk to the woman standing by the large boat. Show her your ticket, then pick “The Battle Resort” as your destination.
Step 3: Once you arrive at the Battle Resort, cross the bridge going north until you’re just below the Pokémon Center, then follow the path to the east.
Step 4: Keep moving east as far as you can, and once you see the beach head to the southeast corner.
You should see the Triathlete here on his bike at the southeast shore. Speak with him to show him whichever bike you have with you.
After speaking to all three NPCs, return to Rydel in Mauville City and he will give you both bikes.
By carrying both bikes at the same time, you can pass through a few previously-inaccessible areas with sandy slopes and ledges. This allows you to collect some rare items, like TM053 Energy Ball.
But even better:
Having both bikes will save you a ton of time since you won’t need to travel back & forth to Rydel’s shop anymore.
