Flame Orbs can only be purchased from the Exchange Service Corner in the Battle Frontier. Each Flame Orb will cost 16 BP, although this is a late-game item since you can only access the Battle Frontier in the post-game.
There are no other ways to acquire Flame Orbs in the game.
Flame Orb Location
Flame Orbs can only be found in the Battle Frontier, which is the huge building to the northeast of the Pokémon Center in the Battle Zone’s Fight Area.
After entering the building, cut through the Entrance Hall and enter the door to the north.
In the middle of the Main Hall will be several kiosks making up a central marketplace. This is the Exchange Service Corner.
Speak to the clerk at the southwestern kiosk (the one with the blue and white striped canopy).
Scroll through her inventory until you find the Flame Orb listing.
Each Flame Orb costs 16 Battle Points (BP). You can only win BP by fighting in the Battle Frontier’s various facilities.
Flame Orb Details and Uses
The Flame Orb is a Hold Item that burns the holder, cutting its Attack by 50% and damaging it at the end of every turn.
Although burning your own Pokémon sounds counterintuitive, there are a couple moves and Abilities that can make great use of a Flame Orb’s effects.
Flame Orb + Guts Ability
The most common Ability that takes advantage of Flame Orbs is Guts.
Guts raises a Pokémon’s attack by 50% if it’s afflicted with a status ailment, and makes the Pokémon immune to the Attack-lowering effect of the burn status.
The Pokémon will still take slight damage on every turn, but it is essentially gaining the much-prized Attack boost of a Choice Band, without the drawback of being locked into using just one kind of move.
Flame Orb + Facade
Another common combination with Flame Orbs is the move Facade; though Facade normally has a base power of 70, it doubles to 140 if the user is poisoned, paralyzed, or burned.
While it is true that the burn status still halves a Facade user’s Attack stat, pairing Facade with the Guts Ability (which ignores the Attack stat decrease from the burn status) can result in a Pokémon with astronomical offensive capabilities.
