Phone Numbers in Pokémon Crystal can be divided into two groups by their acquisition: Trainers and Non-Trainers.
Non-Trainers give you their phone number at a certain point in the game or when some conditions are met. Since they’re not battleable trainers, you don’t need to fight them to get their numbers
Non-Trainer Phone Numbers | ||
---|---|---|
NPC | Acquisition | Uses & Notes |
Mom | Registered automatically at the beginning of the game. |
|
Prof. Elm | Registered automatically at the beginning of the game. |
|
Bill | Given by Bill’s Brother at his residence in Goldenrod City. |
|
Buena | Given by Buena after accumulating 30 Blue Card points from her Radio Show. |
|
On the other hand, Trainers only give you their phone number after beating them in a Pokémon Battle.
After the battle, you need to talk to them again to register their contact.

Most trainers will call you to challenge you to a rematch. A few of them also have secondary functions, like sharing info about swarms or giving you valuable items.

Best Phone Numbers to Keep
Your PokéGear can only hold ten contacts at a time, and three of them are already taken up by Mom, Prof. Elm, and Bill. These numbers can’t be erased.

That leaves us with seven contacts to fill up.
With 25+ phone numbers in the game, choosing just seven is hard.
Here’s a list of ten suggestions to consider keeping in your contacts, at least for a little while during your adventure:

Schoolboy Alan | Route 36 | Free Fire Stones. Fire Stones are needed by Vulpix, Growlithe, and Eevee to evolve. |
PokéFan Derek | Route 39 | Free Nuggets. Nuggets sell for a lot of money (5,000 PokéDollars). |

Bird Keeper Jose | Route 27 | Free Star Pieces. Star Pieces sell for a lot of money (5,000 PokéDollars). |
Buena | Goldenrod Radio Tower |
It’s the ultimate badge of honor, and her phone calls are some of the most entertaining. You can also learn some useful tips by calling her. |
Erasing PokéGear Contacts
You can erase phone numbers by going into [START > PokéGear > Phone] and choosing the contact you no longer need. Then, select Delete from the pop-up menu.
You can recover these phone numbers later by talking to the NPC with at least one free slot in your PokéGear memory.
