How To Get Spell Tags in Pokémon Crystal

You can get your first Spell Tag from Santos, one of the Week Siblings. Santos is found in Blackthorn City on Saturdays. You’ll see him looking out at the town from a ledge southeast of the Pokémon Gym.

Or you can get more Spell Tags as held items on 2% of all wild Misdreavus. You can only find wild Misdreavus at night in Mt. Silver, so you can only farm more Spell Tags in the later part of the game.

Getting Spell Tags

Method #1: Santos at Blackthorn City (Saturday Only)

Starting at Blackthorn Gym, head southeast, down a nearby ledge.

Heading southwest from Blackthorn Gym.

You’ll find Santos to the left, looking out at the town. Talk to him to get a Spell Tag for free.

Method #2: Farm Misdreavus on Mt. Silver

You can find wild Misdreavus on Mt. Silver at night (10PM – 4AM).

Specifically, you’ll find them inside the Mt. Silver Cave.

Mt. Silver is technically in Johto, but you can only access it from the Pokémon League Reception Gate in Kanto.

You’ll find the reception gate north of Route 26 and south of Victory Road.

From there, just go left at the crossroads to enter Route 28. Keep going in the same direction to find Mt. Silver.

Once you find a Misdreavus, you can either use Thief on them to check for Spell Tags, or catch them and check manually.

Spell Tag Uses

The Spell Tag is a held item that increases the Power of Ghost-type moves.

It’s mainly useful when combined with Shadow Ball because most other Ghost-type moves work through effects rather than raw Power.

Ghost-type Pokémon like Misdreavus and Gengar can use the Spell Tag to great effect.
