How To Get Black Belts in Pokémon FRLG

Standing near Crush Kin Ron and Mya on Route 15 (Pokémon FireRed)

There are multiple ways to get the Black Belt held item in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, but every method requires you to steal a Black Belt from an opposing Pokémon in battle.

This guide will only cover details about the quickest method, but I’ve added a table below listing every possible way to acquire Black Belts in FRLG:

All Black Belt Locations
Method How Often?
1 Steal from the Pokémon of any Black Belt NPCs in these locations:

  • Fighting Dojo in Saffron City (Black Belts Hideki, Hitoshi, Mike, Aaron, Koichi)
  • Viridian Gym (Black Belts Kiyo, Atsushi, Takashi)
  • Victory Road (Black Belt Daisuke)
Once-only
2 Steal from the Pokémon of specific trainers that you can rematch with the Vs. Seeker in these locations:

  • Route 15 (Crush Kin Ron & Mya)
  • Sevault Canyon (Crush Girl Cyndy)
  • Kindle Road (Crush Girl Tanya and Sharon, Crush Kin Mik & Kia, Black Belt Hugh and Shea)
Repeatable

There are a lot of trainers you can steal from, but here’s the fastest method:

First you’ll need to teach one of your Pokémon TM 46 Thief (found in Mt. Moon). Afterwards, you will need to travel to Route 15 and participate in a double battle with the two trainers near the top of the route (Crush Kin Ron & Mya).

Use the move Thief on either the Hitmonchan or the Hitmonlee to steal the Black Belt. After the battle, check the Pokémon that used Thief and it will be holding the Black Belt.

Prerequisites

We are quite literally stealing the Black Belt from another trainer with the move Thief, but Poké pickpocketing ain’t easy.

Before you can get the Black Belt you’ll need to first do these things:

  • Find and teach one of your Pokémon TM 46 Thief
  • Teach one of your Pokémon HM01 Cut (to reach the trainers)
  • Obtain the VS Seeker (optional – only needed if you’ve already defeated the trainers on Route 15)
  • Be able to get to Route 15 (east of Fuchsia City)

TM 46 Thief

No matter what, you’re going to need TM 46 Thief. Luckily it’s pretty easy to find.

Head to Mt. Moon just east of Pewter City.

Go inside Mt. Moon and make your way north to the east of the sign and the brunette girl. As you’re walking north, on the left behind a wall, there will be a ladder going down.

Make your way around the wall and head down that ladder.

After you take that ladder down, head left and take the next ladder going down, which will put you in a room with a Rocket Grunt and a Poké Ball (TM 46 Thief).

Pick up the Poké Ball, teach Thief to any Pokémon you want, and then make your way out of Mt. Moon.

VS Seeker (Optional)

You can skip this step if you haven’t been to Route 15 (east of Fuchsia City) and/or if you haven’t defeated these two trainers in a double battle:

If you have already defeated these two trainers, then you have to head to Vermilion City and enter the Pokémon Center.

There’s an NPC in the Pokémon Center with purple hair. Talk to them and they will give you the VS Seeker, no questions asked.

Getting Black Belts

Now that you have Thief and have taught it to one of your Pokémon, head to Fuchsia City. Walk to the east side of the city and cross through the building that leads to Route 15.

On Route 15, head to the end of the hill, and then use cut on the small tree slightly to the north.

Afterwards, walk through the new area and continue west until you see the two trainers pictured below (one is wearing a white karate gi).

Note: Before you battle these two, make sure that the Pokémon you taught Thief is not holding an item, or you won’t be able to steal the Black Belt.

If you have not battled them yet, simply start the battle.

Otherwise you will have to use the VS Seeker. If exclamation marks appear above their head then you can talk to one of them to battle them, otherwise you will have to walk around to recharge your VS Seeker then try again.

Now all you have to do is use the move Thief on the Hitmonchan or the Hitmonlee. If the move hits successfully, a bag will bounce from the Pokémon you used Thief on, bouncing over to the Pokémon that used Thief.

This little animation shows that you’ve successfully stolen the Black Belt.

Once you’ve successfully stolen the Black Belt and once the battle is over, you can open up your Pokémon menu and select the Pokémon that used Thief (Farfetch’d in my case).

Select Item > Take, and you will take the Black Belt from the Pokémon and put it in your inventory.

Now you can go into your inventory and give your Black Belt to any Pokémon that your heart desires (in my case it will be my Mankey!)

Note: Since you can battle these trainers repeatedly with the VS Seeker, this method can be repeated and you can get multiple Black Belts this way.

What’s the Black Belt Used For?

The Black Belt’s description in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

The Black Belt is a held item that increases the damage of Fighting-type moves when held.

As you can probably guess, the Black Belt work best when it’s given to Pokémon like Machamp and Primeape that rely heavily on Fighting-type moves.

Using a Black Belt is a great way to increase the strength of your Fighting-type Pokémon without having to grind and over level. It’s also a good item if you want to take on post-game challenges like Trainer Tower.
